Screenshot of folders that should have previews but do not.

SUMMARY
Prior to the recent update to Plasma 5.24, all previews (for both files and folders) worked correctly on my systems in all scenarios. Now when I try to view file shares from my NAS within Dolphin, the folder previews specifically no longer load. I can still see the previews for individual files once I navigate into folders that contain files, but there are no previews being loaded for folders in the folder icons. I also see folder previews for local folders correctly, it is just the remote folders that are not showing previews. I am seeing this issue on 3 different desktop systems (all running fully updated Arch Linux), and all of them are connecting to my NAS via NFS shares. I have confirmed that no settings have changed on my end and that these folders should have previews being displayed.

See attached screenshot, each of those folders contain video files but no folder previews are being displayed. These exact folders used to display previews correctly before the 5.24 updates.

I thought this might be an issue only on my end until I saw this forum topic (linked below) where another user described having the exact same issue as me, which leads me to believe this might be a KDE issue and not just me.

https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=224&t=174173

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Mount a remote file share that contains folders that have files which should result in folder previews being displayed for those folders.
2. Confirm that your Dolphin preview settings are configured correctly so that previews should be displayed for those folders.
3. Open the remote file share path in Dolphin.

OBSERVED RESULT
Folders that contain media files that should result in folder previews being displayed are not displaying folder previews.

EXPECTED RESULT
The folder icons should include previews in them.

I have the same problem, although the generation of the elements inside a remote folder is working fine, as you mentioned.

I made that duplicate report, having the exact same issue and it's incredibly annoying. I would really love an update on weather this is being looked at, otherwise I might need to look at other file manager options. This has made dolphin borderline unusable for me.

having this issue with folders on volumes formatted as NTFS or exFAT, but not on volumes formatted as FAT32
Comment 5 apfel 2022-03-26 19:35:13 UTC
I have the same problem with files on a mounted cifs drive.

I noticed that the thumbnail function works for files up to 1.5GB in size. As soon as the files are 1.6GB or larger, no thumbnail is created.

It does not matter which thumbnail function it is. With the movies via ffmpegThumbs or with a third party plugin (MovieThumbs) it is exactly the same behavior.

In the Dolphin setting I have set the maximum of 9999999 MB for "Skip previews for remote files above". However, this does not affect the limit of 1.5/1.6GB. If I enter a "0" in the field, then this already has an effect, then no thumbnail is created for any file (remote).

Reproduced on Arch running 5.24.3
My CIFS file-system is mounted at boot using fstab and has this issue.
Previews for items inside the folders work fine, currently have dolphin set to 100MB limit for files but changing doesn't help.

This could be bug 452048.
Comment 8 MarcP 2022-04-06 17:36:49 UTC
I can confirm this bug in the beta version of Kubuntu 22.04 (that will be released in two weeks) with Plasma 5.24.4. In a folder mounted via sftp, folder thumbnails are not generated even if it's configured in the settings. For local thumbnails there is no issue.
Comment 9 lsalle 2022-04-23 14:30:51 UTC
I can confirm the problem with folders mounted via NFS on OpenBSD 7.1 with Dolphin 21.12.2.
Comment 10 andy 2022-04-26 22:25:01 UTC
On Arch Linux x64, just upgraded and with Dolphin 22.04.0 can no longer see thumbnails on any files from cifs mount from my NAS. At some point before this I could also no longer see the thumbnails on a remote folder containing media, and this is still the case.

I do still have thumbnails on a local drive, including on a folder containing media.

Problem persists in current KDE Neon Unstable Edition

KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.94.0

My dude literally just authored a commit that fixed it like 40 minutes ago, so he marked it as resolved. You gotta wait for the latest build to incorporate the patch and then your distribution to ship it, of course it's still going to be an issue for you.

Ah my bad

Using the live-ebuilds under Gentoo, I can confirm that the patch has fixed the bug.

Confirming with arch linux kio 5.94.0-1 resolved issue. Now have thumbnails on files and folders. Yay!
Comment 19 Paul Meier 2022-05-16 10:43:40 UTC
Already existing thumbnails load now, but new thumbnails are not not generated if the folder is not opened. Problem is therefore NOT fixed. Also on Arch with 5.94.0-1.
This problem also still persists on Neon Unstable with 5.95.0

Is this a different issue? I tried this on both a local folder and a cifs mounted folder and both are the same.

1. Create folder "test"
2. In chromium download an image into the folder
3. In Dolphin, navigate to parent folder containing test
4. Hit F5 to refresh - no thumbnail on the folder
5. Double click the folder to enter it
6. See the thumbnail generated
7. Return to parent folder
8. See the thumbnail on the folder

This was the case for both local and samba mounted folder for me. Seems like a different bug. Does it behave the same for you?

No, before you could open a directory with subfolders and the thumbnails for elements inside those subfolders would be generated without needing to open them separately

Hi,

I'm using Dolphin 22.04.3 with the KDE framework 5.95.0, and I still can't see the folder thumbnails on remote folders. I upgraded my Kubuntu 22.04 installation using the backports repository (https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports)

Is there something else I am missing?
