Even better: the spellchecker should recognize which language is currently used, like this: show a combo box in the tool bar that says "negotiating language" when the composer is opened. When some words have been typed, it switches to the language where spell checking has the least number of errors. Another good thing about the combo box is that it always gives feedback, unlike the currect status bar display. And you can always select "Don't check" in that box if you want. The number of languages must probably be configured somehow so that checking doesn't get too slow.
I like this. FYI, it is one of those fuzzy polish features, that make MS Word bearable. Note that Outlook does not have this feature if you compose HTML mails of course...
## English Spell Checking when XIM Chinese Input is enabled ## I am basically using an English KDE desktop with occasional need for Chinese input. I just need chinese input so that I can send out Chinese email messages, I do not need Chinese interface and dialogue. I have miniChinput, XIM compliant, install on my system. In order to activate chinese input, I need to set the enviroment parameters LANG=zh_CN and LC_TYPC=zh_CN. However, once that is set, I will have problem checking my english spelling KDE applications, namely, kmail and kword. When I tried to spell check my document, I will get a message "path to Aspell not found". When I reset the parameters back to LANG=POSIX and LC_TYPE=POSIX, spell check worked again. Similar problem did not occur in non-KDE applicatons, namely OpenOffice and Mizilla mail. I just wish that the kspell setting not be affect by the LANG and LC_TYPE parameters to facilitate the mixture of Chinese and English in one document.
I just want to note that the original wish (identity-dependant dictionary) will be fulfilled in KDE 3.2. Furthermore switching the dictionary on the fly in the composer (for the new as-you-type spellchecking) will be possible in KDE 3.2. Automatic language detection is a completely different wish. Daniel, please file a new bug report for this.
