Previously (I guess before version 5.20), one convenient way of searching recent files was to start typing "recent files". It's convenient because often I don't recall the filename of what I had opened until I see the recent files list. Not sure why this feature was removed, but now I can only search a recent file if I know its name, which seems very limiting for a recent files list.
KRunner is a search-based tool, so this would seem to make some sense to me. I suspect what what you were doing was only accidentally supported. :) Still, perhaps we could fix it. In the meantime, you can file a static list of your recently-used files in Kickoff's History tab and the "Recent Files" item in Dolphin.
So this is more like a feature request to add a trigger word to this runner which will display an overview?

Can you please check if the entry exists in dolphin? Also since Plasma 5.20 it uses the activities data, please also check if you have this disabled(Activities systemsettings page and then the privacy tab)
I don't mean that. The functionality I described used to be there so this seems more like a bug report but given Nate's point perhaps it should be made a wish.
Then this is pretty much the same as BUG 313301, IMHO it makes little sense to add a trigger word as long as we haven't implemented a good usage help. See https://phabricator.kde.org/T13073
