Can you verify that qml-module-qtquick-particles2 is installed?
Ideed, qml-module-qtquick-particles2 was not installed. It is in the repos and installing it resolves the problem. So the bug looks like a package dependency problem. But also indicates to some error handling problems in the desktop app. Btw, the pointer is a great feature when it works, wow!
Then it's a known issue. Ultimatley it's something that needs to be fixed in distro packaging. the good news is that my fix for Debian jsut got merged so it will find its way to Ubuntu eventually *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 414913 ***
