Description KOT040188 2020-03-28 17:28:44 UTC
I have a suggestion for improving the functionality of the player. In the left column there are various ways to sort tracks by genre, album, artist and other tags. Most players use the tag "album artist." The elisa player uses the tag "artist".
This tag may differ in the tracks of one album and sorting by it personally is not convenient for me. I suggest replacing the artist tag with the album artist tag. I would also like to see the tag "composer" in the list. I think the best solution is to add the ability to customize your tags for sorting.

Thanks for opening this bug.

Indeed composer is missing.

I would like first to finish making the list of views configurable before adding more default ones.

I am not sure I really understand your point about "artist" or "album artist". Could you please explain it a bit more ?

Here https://www.blisshq.com/music-library-management-blog/2010/10/12/how-to-use-album_artist/ is written about the albumartist tag. There is a rival elisa in gnome called lollypop. Lollypop uses the "album artist" tag to sort. Many players use this particular tag for sorting.
And the tag "artist" is displayed only in the list of albums and playlist. I have been using this tag for a long time while editing and can not imagine how I can do without it.

The "artist" vs "album artist" distinction is relevant mostly in the case of compilations, where you have an album with one album artist but many artists. I agree that overall "Album Artist" is a better way to sort as it improves the display for compilations but does not negatively affect the common case of non-compilation single-artist albums.

There are many other uses for this tag. For example, in electronic music, when the author creates remixes of other people's tracks. This tag is also convenient for specifying duets for individual tracks. I have very few compilation, but many other uses of this tag.

There's more explanation for Album Artist in Bug 407964.

Let's use this to track sorting by Composer.
