The project I opened had been compiled and saved by Kdenlive version 18.4 installed on opensuse Leap 15.1 while the error occured on Leap 15.2 alpha
codecs ffmpeg were installed

Please try with the current Kdenlive AppImage version 19.12.1 to see if there are any packaging issues https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/ 

If the problem/issue doesn't occur when using the AppImage, then it's your configuration or packaging.


Delete following files: kdenliverc, kdenlive-appimagerc see here https://community.kde.org/Kdenlive/Configuration. Try again.

As described above can you please try with the appimage (latest version is 20.12.2 at the moment, https://kdenlive.org/en/download/) and report here whether this is still happening?

As that bug report happened more than a year ago I cannot recall the details of it. However, I reported bug #433654 more recently which occurred with kdenlive-20.12.2-x86_64.appimage. I can now confirm that that non-conformance behaviour hasn't occurred again recently. I now manage to open stored projects as expected. I can only speculate on why it happened before.
