Very plain Genre view

Genre view is my preferred base level of navigation, and I'm happy that Elisa has it. However it's currently a very plain view because each genre has the same icon, negating the purpose of using icons. Any view where each item has the same icon is generally not a good candidate for being an icon grid.

I recommend either setting custom images for each genre, or else making it a list-style view and removing the icons.

I would actually prefer to have all the genres listed in the sidebar, if possible. Lollypop does this and I really like it.

We could try to follow the approach in Lollypop of using some albums cover as a way to illustrate the genre.
As for the view menu, I would really like to make it user configurable. As part of this, it would be nice to allow the user to have direct access to a category (genre, composers, artists, ...) through the menu.

That could work if it remains a grid view with large icons. Or if we make it a list view, then maybe we could even remove the icons, and the problem would go away.

+1, I would love that. I would make Genre the base level of organization and show all my genres in the view selector sidebar, which is how I have Lollypop set up.

As part of bringing back UPnP/DLNA support, doing exactly this is planned.

Here’s an example of how one can use icons to representing different musical genres:
