Screenshot of the problem

SUMMARY

When a plasmoid has a very long name, it is truncated and there is no way to determine what the plasmoid is.
The same goes for the description.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

Start plasmashell with the fr locale (or any locale with names slightly longer than english) and search for widgets with a truncated name.
Alternatively, create a test widget with a very long name.

OBSERVED RESULT

The screenshot in attachment contains an example with the Input Panel Method: both name and description are truncated.
Because of this, there is no way to tell what the widget is or does.

The widget explorer offers no way to see more data than what's displayed.

EXPECTED RESULT

This is an UX problem, so there is no obvious solution.
A tooltip with the full name on each widget would help a lot.

Maybe adding a "details" button to display a window similar to the details window of the Plasma Add-On Installer ?

VDG, any neat solutions?

With the existing width of the Widget Explorer, I think increasing the maximum number of lines makes sense here, along with the height of the delegates. Browsing the code, it looks like the AppletDelegate goes to great pains to prevent the number of lines from ever exceeding four. Now that I really look at the Widget explorer, I notice that a number of widgets get their text cut off even in English (Application Menu, Dictionary, Display Configuration, Hard Disk I/O Monitor, Hard Disk Space Usage, Minimize all Windows, System Tray, Window List). I imagine the problem is much worse in wordier languages like German, French, and Portuguese. IMHO there's not much use in keeping the display all compact and tidy if it results in important text getting cut off.

Dumb-but-effective solution: increase the max lines to 3 for titles and 4 for the description, and increase the minimum height of the delegate accordingly.

Slightly smarter solution: calculate the maximum number of lines for the longest delegate and then size all of them accordingly, which would prevent them from being so tall for languages that aren't as long.

Out-of-left-field solution: increase the width of the Widget Explorer and the delegates by, say, 25-50% so that there's more horizontal space for text.

I was never a fan of the two-column widget explorer, it just doesn't work in German. Perhaps we should revisit the design and opt for a wider delegate again like we used to have.

One *partial* solution is for the translators of the widget names/descriptions to add soft hyphen to long words. Soft hyphens are normally invisible, but if a word can’t fit on a line, it will be automatically broken at the soft hyphen(s) (which then becomes visible).

We do this for the Norwegian Nynorsk translation. I’ll attach a screenshot. In it, you can see that the widget name ‘Aktivitetsbytar’ and the word ‘aktivitetshandsamaren’ in a widget description are broken over two lines.
