Description Jens 2018-09-29 19:13:10 UTC
SUMMARY
see $SUBJECT

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Select no image
2. Select "descriptions" sidebar (containing description, tags, information tabs)
3. Try to change tabs

OBSERVED RESULT
The whole sidebar is disabled (not usable)

EXPECTED RESULT
It should be possible to at least change tabs, enter tag keywords, and create new tags or delete tags. Same for "Metadata" and "Colors" tab, the map (should be movable and zoomable). All those actions do not depend on a specific image.
This is an old issue, it was already present in the 4.x series.

SOFTWARE VERSIONS: Kubuntu 18.04, Appimage 6.0-beta1 20180926xxxx
(available in About System)

I've played a bit with an active description tab without a selected image. I think we leave it as it is at the moment. You can re-order the tags or call the tag manager, but also activate the checkboxes, change the date, enter a descriptive text without making any sense. Why should the metadata or color tab remain active? They are empty. I tend to WONTFIX.

Just me chiming in. I think a good idea would be to display information about all elements in the folder or tag when no picture is selected (that's the default behavior in some other picture managers). For instance, showing all the tags present in that album/folder, or all the locations on the map, etc. At least it's more useful than showing nothing at all.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I didn't mean activate the tab *contents*, just the tabs.
I want to be able to e.g. change from "Description" to "Tags" tab without a selected image, to add or delete or reorganize some tabs.

It's a small usability issue, but it kept getting on my nerves.
And in the "Versions" sidebar, this actually works this way.

Of course, this would all be superfluous if my new compact sidebar view was implemented, see #377857 ... :-)

We need a fresh feedback on this file using this version.

Thanks in advance

Still valid.

I vote for this feature. Since i replayed with Image Properties tab from right side bar, It will be suitable to show the current album properties when no item is selected.

We have already a stacked view to show the properties of selected items in current album, it can be easily expanded when selection is null.

With 8.2.0 the behaviour of the various tabs in the right side bar with no selected image is inconsistent. The Metadata tab allows you to switch between EXIF, Makernote etc; The entire Colours and Captions tabs are greyed-out, the Versions, Filters and Tools tabs are active, etc.

As no selection is made, I'd argue that most tabs should be greyed-out, or better still should simply display text saying something like "select an image to see its information".

The Properties tab could indeed be repurposed to show Album information when no selection is made.
