For usability, I think it will be fine to narrow distance between some elements. Let me show what I'm talking about, reading my wish for Krusader https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=380878.

You can see what I'm talking about seeing image https://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=105962  (take into account that where I put "stretched" I should type "narrowed".
