Warning, UX bug. Feel free to close as WONTFIX if you disagree. I recently observed a new KDE user browse through the main Systemsettings window in search for the sound configuration KCM. This user missed the Multimedia icon because: 1) "This icon looks like a monitor, but I wanted to configure sound so I was looking for a speaker" 2) No mental association between Sound / Audio the abstract concept of Multimedia 3) Multimedia appears way down in the window Here are some (personal) ideas to give better cues to the user: 1) Split the Sound kcm and promote it to a top-level entry in the systemsettings main window 2) Change the Multimedia icon to look more distinct from a display, possibly including a speaker logo (either alone, or besides a film, a "play button" or a clapperboard). 3) Rename Multimedia to "Sound and Video" 4) Move the Hardware group up, at least before Network and possibly also before Personalization
With the oxygen icons, a video clap and a musical note is displayed. I assume you are using breeze icons, and this icon looks confusing?
Yes, I'm using Breeze Dark, but also regular Breeze shows the same LCD panel with a play logo. I filed bug 379885 to track this. Can we leave this bug open for the remaining suggestions? Specifically: 1) Promote the Sound kcm to a top-level entry in the System Settings main window 2) Alternatively, rename Multimedia to "Sound and Video" 3) Move the Hardware group up, at least before Network and possibly also before Personalization
Still present in Plasma 5.12.2.
add also a screenshot of the wrong icon
Perhaps we should change the icon to add a speaker in front of the screen. Seems reasonable and not too hard. Now that the sidebar icon size has been increased to 32px, we have a bit more room to work with too.
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #5) > Perhaps we should change the icon to add a speaker in front of the screen. > Seems reasonable and not too hard. Now that the sidebar icon size has been > increased to 32px, we have a bit more room to work with too. Sounds good. Or move Audio Volume (probably the most useful of the two) to the top level, and fold Audio and Video somewhere else (or bring it to the top level too, for lack of a better place)
Since the Audio KCM was moved out of the Multimedia category, I think this bug can be closed.
