Description Wim Delvaux 2017-01-02 00:23:08 UTC
Since quite some time (IIRC since KDE5 came around) I have been having problems with the kicker pop-up not appearing when left clicked on.

I notice that when I iconize all my windows (so the desktop is empty but the applications are still running) then the popup does show up.

Also sometimes when I persist on clicking left the popup does appear but there is no rule to it when the popup appears

Kicker is new in 5, so ...

Could you record a screencast? I have trouble understanding the explanation.
Comment 2 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-02 11:32:17 UTC
yes I can ... here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-e5DvtVoYgZQnl2YzlyLXpRcDg/view?usp=sharing

Let my try to reiterate.

Normally when click left click on the 'K' (kicker) Icon on the panel generally on the bottom of the screen a popup pops up that shows the list if installed applications, and other things. That popup allows you to start applications.

Since KDE5 that popup does not always popup. I.e. the menu does not appear and hence you cannot start applications.

Until recently i persisted clicking, click a right, click on the panel, ... all to try to make that popup appear.

Recently I noticed that when you iconize all application visible on the desktop, that popup does show even if moments ago, when the iconized application were still visible, it did not even after multiple clicks.

Oddly the right click which allows you to configure the kicker does not have this problem

Do you use a non-default setting for "Focus stealing prevention" or "Focus follows mouse" in the window manager settings, or a window manager other than kwin?
Comment 4 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-02 11:47:54 UTC
yes ... my setting is 'Focus follows mouse - mouse precedence'

IIRC. i have put it on other settings and again IIRC that did not help
Comment 5 Eike Hein 2017-01-02 11:52:59 UTC
This is probably the reason though - the popup closes when it loses focus, and this means it loses it immediately after gaining it.
Comment 6 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-02 13:46:35 UTC
1. what setting should I try to see if the popup consistently pops up ?

2. before KDE5 I never had this problem
Comment 7 Eike Hein 2017-01-02 14:45:02 UTC
This menu didn't exist before Plasma 5 :)
Comment 8 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-02 14:57:29 UTC
I agree but there was something 'similar'. not ?
Comment 9 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-02 15:06:58 UTC
I just modified the window management settings to 'click to focus' and the popup *does not* appear !
Comment 10 Eike Hein 2017-01-03 06:07:09 UTC
Ok, then there is some other reason.

I mean, of course this isn't a common bug. I can't reproduce it and you're the first person to report it. I still think it must be some sort of unique setting on your end, so we need to find out which it is ...
Comment 11 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-03 21:46:57 UTC
Yes that would help :)

I have an NVIDIA card with NVIDIA drivers if that helps.

Can I perhaps download a 'debug' version of kicker which I could run ?

Here's what I want you to do first: Add a new user account to your system, log into the user account, do no changes except switch to Kicker, then see if the problem happens with the new user, too.
Comment 13 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-09 21:05:00 UTC
Got around to test with clean new user.

there it seems to be working as far as I can tell.

I noticed that kicker was using a different appearance (the one with the icons on the bottom) whereas my own session uses the one with cascading menus.

However switching did not change anything ... sadly :(
Comment 14 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-09 21:07:06 UTC
One more remark

I switched to the full screen launcher and that works (until now)
Comment 15 Eike Hein 2017-01-10 07:03:50 UTC
Are you saying it doesn't work with the cascading menus one in the new user? (This is actually Kicker, the one with the icons at the bottom is called Kickoff and the other one Dashboard.)
Comment 16 Wim Delvaux 2017-01-10 23:42:46 UTC
ok

so kickoff nor kicker work even on the clean user. Dashboard does work
Comment 17 Eike Hein 2017-01-11 10:11:56 UTC
Thanks. Unfortunately now we still need to figure out why it happens on your system and no one else's though ... hmm.
Comment 18 Eike Hein 2017-03-20 11:37:37 UTC
Bug 352647 seems related.
Comment 19 Wim Delvaux 2017-03-20 11:50:41 UTC
Indeed ! als my window stealing is set to High.

This bug has had its resolution changed, but accidentally has been left in NEEDSINFO status. I am thus closing this bug and setting the status as RESOLVED to reflect the resolution change.
