Description Reece 2016-01-09 22:04:09 UTC
This is on a Macbook Pro 8,1 that I'm experiencing this issue. As you can imagine it's quite important.

The entire system stops responding and the only thing you can do is reboot the machine. The fans also speed up and the laptop gets very hot, so it's obviously busy doing something.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Dolphin file manager.
2. Click the root folder.
3. Wait or if the crash does not happen instantly, attempt to scroll to the bottom.

Actual Results:
As stated above the entire system crashes. The only thing that can be done is rebooting the machine.

Expected Results:
The root folder should open without crashing.

Got same issue. Opening root dir in dolphin is killing any KB/MOUSE input - OS is working, for example music still playing, ksysguard graphs still changing, but keyboard and mouse are not responsive so I need to hard reset my machine.

Reproducible: Always

Plasma 5.4.3
Frameworks 5.15
Ubuntu 15.10 (Qt 5.4.2)

Same here on a MacBookPro9,2 under Mint 18.1, KDE Plasma 5.8.5

as stated here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353504
The bug seem to be related to preview of /dev and /proc.

disabling previews in dolphin prevent the crash when the root folder is selected from the left pannel.

Just tried this. I can confirm that disabling the preview will prevent the system crash in dolphin. However when using, e.g., Gwenview to access the file system root, it will still crash.

Furthermore, accessing /proc from dolphin will completely freeze the process. And in a way I cant even kill it. This happens as well if the preview is disabled in dolphin.

The linked thread stated that the issue is not KDE related. However, when I was using Linux Mint with Cinnamon, I did not have this issues. Is this a KDE only bug or not?

We need a backtrace to figure out what's wrong: https://community.kde.org/Dolphin/FAQ/Crashes

If Dolphin freezes, please run it from gdb, then as soon as it freezes, type 'CTRL+C' and then 'bt' and post here the output.

Can you still reproduce this bug with a newer version of Dolphin? If yes, please follow the steps mentioned in comment 7 to get a backtrace. Thanks!

I just tested it. The issue does not occur anymore on my machine (HP 6530b) using Kubuntu 18.04 and Dolphin 17.12.3.
I can open the root folder with both preview enabled and disabled and have no crash. Furthermore I can open /proc and /dev without any crash, lag or freeze.

Everything is peachy, thx.
