Background ----------------- Currently, it is not quite straightforward for the regular user to encrypt one or more files. E.g. one way is to 1) Right-click on a folder or set of files in dolphin 2) Select Compress... 3) Select Compress To... 4) Select 7-zip archive from the Filter dropdown 5) Check the "Protect the archive with a password" option 6) Enter the password 7) Click save Goal ------ It would be nice if KDE/Plasma had a service menu for files and folders to specifically create an encrypted archive. Encrypted 7-zip archives have reasonably strong encryption, I think. So, the above-mentioned process could be simplified to this: 1) Right-click on a folder or set of files in dolphin 2) Select Actions... (which is more intuitive then Compress...) 3) Select "Encrypt to archive file" --> the Ark save dialog is opened with 7-zip archive preselected from the Filter dropdown --> and "Protect the archive with a password" option checked 4) Enter the password 5) Click save Next steps -------------- To realize the goal, I suggest to extend the ark command line interface with an option to have 7-zip with password encryption preselected in the ark Save dialog.
"Currently, it is not quite straightforward for the regular user to encrypt one or more files." To be more precise: the use-case is here is a simple ad-hoc encryption to send one or files via email or shared folder to another person.
I agree, already got some feedback about the need for some kind of "Compress with password" service menu entry. My idea is to show a custom dialog where the user just type a password and, optionally, choose one of the format that allows encryption (where 7z would probably be the default selection).
