Opening dolphin with icon sizes 32px (the default) I now see all the folder icons as monochrome as well as normal file icons now have strange icons (it uses those of small icons).

I have 24" big screen and browsing a folder full of folders now gives me vertigo and makes my head spin from all the high contrast grid those icons create.

This happened sometime last week, I suspect commit bd16dd1551bb2c1d7fb65fba3c61d288bd66eb2d which changes

 [mimetypes/file-types]
-MinSize=32
+MinSize=48

...which makes Dolphin use the small-icons for default folders sizes. This also appears in open/save file dialog.

Also, see screenshot.

32px icons with different folder icons
Comment 3 andreas 2015-08-03 19:18:14 UTC
Hi,

I change the settings. The reason is that the standard folder size is for the small icons 16 px and the large ones 64 px. So the icons are optimized for this size. All other sizes are scalled.

The reason why I say small icons for 16px, 22px and 32px is that the large icons are really difficult to read in 32px and the users have problems when they want to know if it is an download folder or an image folder. https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=285&t=124786

In the first image you see the large and small icons for 32px. You have right, the colored large icons looks nicer in 32px, but as you can see in the second image it is much easier to see if it is an folder or an folder-image, folder-download, ....

I'll talk to the main icon developer Uri Herrera. The final solution would be to make new file icons optimized for 32px. But Plasma 5.4 knocking on the door and I'm busy with testing I can't offer you the final solution. As you are a developer and the VDG will have an good contact with the devs I will change the settings as it was before if you wish. In my opinion the large 64px are to difficult to read in 32px size.

Yeah, reading the forum thread also seems to suggest that this would be a very good, if not the best, course of action. But I also understand that this would be a lot of work.

I understand. That is of course a valid concern.

Well if your feedback is generally good, then you don't need to change just because of me. It's just that now when I see a full screen folder, the black and white high-contrast grid those icons make, creates kind of Hermann grid illusion[1] in my mind, which gives me very uncomfortable feeling while looking on such screen, it makes it very hard for me to work with such folders (and I do that a lot).

Hi,

32px Places and Mimetype support was added to the working icon dictionary https://github.com/NitruxSA/plasma-next-icons/pull/239 and will be added tonight (10 hours) to kde:breeze

For me it looks good. hope the solution helps your eyes and you can contribute to kde as long as you like.

thanks for helping make breeze better and better,
Andreas K
