Description Donald Day 2015-05-05 18:09:33 UTC
Right-click on previously saved .odt file results in the error dialog repeated in Summary, after LibreOffice has been selected from context menu. Happens consistently in Dolphin, though a left-click of .odt files in the system tray file viewer (desktop folder) launches LibreOffice correctly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Dolphin from Favorites.
2. Navigate through folders to target LibreOffice Writer file (.odt).
3. Right-click filename, left-click 'LibreOffice' from context menu.

Actual Results:
Error dialog appears, displaying message entered here in Summary

Expected Results:
Expect targeted file to open within LibreOffice.

Workaround is to launch LibreOffice from Favorites, then within LibreOffice navigate to the target file; use the Open function to access the file. (Very inconvenient). Running Kubuntu 15.04, installed on release day and updated several times since (today is May 5). Kernel is 3-19.0-16-generic, KDE Plasma 5.2.2. Computer is 64-bit Intel i5 with 8 Gb memory, booting from 500 Gb Western Digital drive. Note: Have seen in forums complaints that third-party software could not be launched normally in 15.04 (and in earlier versions); this bug may be an example of that problem.

The .desktop files for the applications probably have "ksystraycmd" prepended to Exec key. Simply removing it should work.

There is no reference to ksystraycmd in the .desktop file of the Syno-App mentioned in Bug 347312. Any Ideas?

I looked into System Settings and found that ".odt" files are indeed assigned by default to LibreOffice Writer (so that's not the problem). However, in a small test I saved empty files of every other LibreOffice type, then was able to open them with the right-click followed by left-click application selection. So, this bug is unique to Writer files. In the same test, I again tried right-click, left-click application for an .odt file; the same error dialogue as I reported earlier appeared, consistently. Maybe this refinement of the original bug report will help find a fix.

One more detail that may help in locating the bug: It appears that this problem occurs not only with ".odt" files, but also with other files managed by LibreOffice (e.g., ".doc"). Therefore, the problem is not unique to the .odt filetype but surfaces whenever a LibreOffice Writer associated file is to be accessed via right-click in Dolphin.

One more key factor: I tested this problem on a laptop running the 32-bit version of Kubuntu 15.04. The right-click of a test .odt file launched Writer exactly as it should. So, this glitch appears to be only in the AMD64 version of the o/s (and only for Writer-associated files).

A major hardware error not involving the hdd forced me to make a fresh install of 15.04 on a new hdd. After the fresh install, conducted during the week of 27 September, the left-click/.odt problem disappeared. So, either the original anomaly was the result of a local corruption error or someone fixed the error in a subsequent version of the distribution. In any case, this ticket can be closed.
