Windows and tabs are quite similar in some ways, clicking middle mouse button on a tab closes it in almost every application. So I think there should be an option which enables this in task manager (icons only and the regular one both). Or it could be list of things like toggle all-desktops, maximize, etc The current middle click behaviour (new in plasma 5) is rather annoying. I think task manager should catch middle click and not pass it on to panel whether the option is enabled or not, nobody would expect this note widget mayhem when middle-clicking on a task. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Middle click on a task manager task Actual Results: Note widget pops up. Expected Results: Note widget doesn't appear on panel and specified action is executed (task closed or whatever).
The panel will no longer react to middle clicks in Plasma 5.3. People request "start new instance" vs. "close" at about equal rates for middle-click on tasks.
How about adding a drop-down to config, which contains: none(default), start new instance, close? That would satisfy most people.

IMHO, middle clicking on the task thumbnail should close it. If you middle click the icon it should open a new instance.
Well, I personally find the tooltips annoying and have them disabled, but still would like to close tasks fast. Besides tooltip has a close button already.

5.4 will have "On middle-click: None / Close Group or Window / New Instance" options. cf. https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/123547/ and http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=plasma-desktop.git&a=commit&h=ebc796a61db738a1f955d2d50a8921c7c312f1bf
