Description Stephan Henrichs 2015-02-02 10:42:33 UTC
Last night i had an idea for KDE: The ability to show notifications on the lock screen. So basicly when you lock your pc (or time based lock kicks in) and a notification arrives it would be shown on lock screen. In order for it to show there it would have to be enabled in the applications .notifyrc file, giving the user control over what notifications show up on the lock screen.
Furthermore if the monitor is turned off (software side), it would wake the monitor for a minute or two. A running screensaver would also be exited for this time to ensure that the user can see the notification.

Possible usage scenarios: KDE on tablet PC; People who let their pc run while they do other things in the room.

Note, that i am not sure if i posted this in the right place. I hope i did.

Reproducible: Always

Iirc, last time this was brought up, was turned down as a security concern (where security = privacy).

As for screen turning on or screensaver going away, that's probably too far stretched. What could be acceptable is to keep the notifications on screen until you unlock/become active again.
Comment 2 Stephan Henrichs 2015-02-02 21:28:20 UTC
I can totally understand the security concern. Thats however why i suggested to make it configurable to the same extend as you can configure if an notification makes - let's say - a sound. Now, regarding waking/deactivating screensavers: If your screen is off, how would you see a notification without periodically checking your device. If it gets woken you will see it from quite a distance. And as with everything i would strongly assume that this is configurable. So the user could select whether the screensaver should turn off or the screen should be woken.

An update - Martin Graesslin asked me today about the possibility of notifications on lock screen and we did come up with sort of a plan. So it may happen after all.

For the rest - I'm not the maintainer, but my opinion is that waking things up just because of any notification is quite expensive and kinda defeats the purpose of DPMS screen saving...but I may be wrong on that.
Comment 4 Stephan Henrichs 2015-02-02 21:54:24 UTC
It certainly depends on how many notifications you get. If you get like one every 5 minutes, i can clearly see your point. But if you get them with at most like 30 minutes apart, a minute or two of time its on shouldn't make that much of a difference. Since this all depends on the person using the machine, it would be wise to be able to configure if it shall wake the monitor, and if so, for how long.
Comment 5 Martin Klapetek 2015-02-02 22:28:24 UTC
Just by the way, all notifications have configurable sound, I'd believe that it's just better to assign easily recognizable sounds to certain events one is interested about and turn on your speakers.

Nevertheless, please let's stick with one report per bug, if you wish to pursue this further, please open a new bug/wish for powerdevil, where this would go. Feel free to reference this bug.

...and let's leave this report for notifications on lock screen only. Thanks.

This report is rather old, but I would like to see this in a future version of Plasma 5. Modern desktop OS's like Mac OS and Windows 10 both implement this feature and even some Linux DE's like GNOME. It could be togglable for privacy reasons, but I would like the option.
Comment 7 Buck Shockley 2018-04-30 04:30:25 UTC
I'd also like to see this implemented into KDE, bringing a feature from other OSes and some DEs to Plasma. Due to security concerns, we can make this toggleable or just show the applications that sent notifications instead of the full detail, i.e.

"3 Notifications from Thunderbird"
"5 Notifications from Discord"
"24 Updates Available"
etc.
Comment 8 Ricardo J. Barberis 2019-05-27 04:31:53 UTC
This was suggested recently on a comment to a GSoC post and I thought it'd be really nice addition to the lock screen.

So I searched bugzilla before opening a feature request and found this one :)

Was there any work on this or just discussions?

Thanks.

This is being worked on for Plasma Mobile, I believe. I'd like to have it on Plasma Desktop too.

Needs to be optional due to privacy and security considerations, of course.
