Description Movlas 2014-06-22 03:00:04 UTC
There is really nothing remarkable that detinguishes Dolphin from Nemo or Explorer or anyother file manager.
The only file manager that stands out in this very homogenous crowd is Apple's Finder and that's because it has both a image/file preview function and most importantly, Miller Columes.

Dolphin used to have columes, but for some incomprehensiable reason, they were discontinued.

Columes are the main reason that I don't completely dump OSX and switch to Linux.

You guys can fix this, but will you?

Best regards,
Movlas

We know that quite a few people liked the Columns View - it was not an easy decision to drop it. A lot has been written about this issue already, and I'm afraid I cannot repeat it all over and over again every time someone says that they want the Columns View back. Please see, e.g., bug 333744 and bug 290747 for details. Thanks.

Colomn view from Dolphin version 1.1

Dolphin in undergoing the process of de-evolution, DEVO.
The image is from version 1.1.
As you can see it was far more advanced than the current version.

Maybe it's time to go looking for Peter Prenz?

Please have a look at all the comments in the mentioned bug.
There is all the information, why we don't re-add the columns view.

Sometimes you have to throw out some heavy (codewise) features, to make the code more
maintainable, we are only a small number of developers who work on Dolphin.
So we should better focus on a small set of features, but make them really stable.

Peter Penz was a really great developer and maintainer.

But Frank does this job at least as good as Peter. Have a look
at all the review request and the ideas he brings (e.g. KDirListner,
FreeSpaceInfo, ....) in and you will see what I mean.
Also the number of bugs in our bugtracker
went down really fast and is constantly low, thanks to his great
work - this is the result of well maintained code.

Thanks!

Fortunately, you can use Dolphin 1.1 or any other version (the last one which had the Columns View was 1.7) quite easily. The source code is still available and can be built easily on top of any KDE SC 4.x version, like 4.13.

If there is a big demand for this, these versions could also be made available easily in add-on repositories for recent distributions. If you cannot find one, please consider implementing something like this for your distribution. Everyone who misses the Columns View will be grateful!

Please do get in touch with him (you can find his email address in bug 290747) and ask if he is willing to come back and help to make Dolphin better. I would definitely appreciate it if he would!

However, I'm not sure if he would like your Columns View idea. It was him who removed it, but if you actually followed any of the links in my last comment, then you already know that ;-)
