Description Pablo 2013-10-17 20:20:41 UTC
I would really like to be able to open a file from the filepicker dialog, because sometimes the thumbnail is just not big enough to decide which file is the one you want to send, upload or whatever. It would be cool being able to double click in the thumbnail panel or press a key to open it or something like that.

Reproducible: Always

You can also use right click > Properties > Preview to get a larger preview, without starting an external application.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be cool and fast to be able to open the file right from there to see it full screen and/or make just one last edit instead of having to find it in dolphin? Besides in your way I would have to resize the properties window to get a bigger picture, which i can already do from the dialog.

I think it makes sense from a usability point of view, it bores me to death every time I face this situation.

rename would also be a useful right click action

You can right-click on a file and choose "Show Containing Folder", and then immediately hit the return key to open it. That should satisfy this use case, because actually editing the file itself from the open dialog doesn't make any sense. Opening the file in another app likewise doesn't make a lot of sense for any use case I can think up. The purpose of the Open dialog is to choose a file to open in the program that you're already running. If the issue is that the preview is too small so it's hard to see the differences between files, it can be enlarged, and we should investigate using a better inline previewer like KLook--a clone of macOS Quick Look--which is an excellent solution for this issue. See Bug 272539.
