Description mkkot 2013-10-13 13:18:46 UTC
In Archlinux, after updating:
GTK2 2.24.20-1 ->  2.24.22-1
and
GTK 3 3.8.4-1 -> 3.10.1-1

there are missing icons in GTK2 and GTK3 apps while using them with oxygen icons theme. It happens because Oxygen style doesn't have all the icons needed. Before the udate missing icons were just falled back from gnome icon theme, but now, I guess, according to this document:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-theme-spec/icon-theme-spec-latest.html
you have to provide Inherits key with gnome theme.

And so, index.theme actually provided:
Inherits=hicolor

While I added:
Inherits=hicolor,gnome

my problem with missing icons was fixed.

Probably you have better understanding of what is actually going on with this problem and freedesktop specification but I though it is better to fill a report so you can carry on with this.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install xfce
2. Open xfce's settings manager, set oxygen icon theme
3. Update gtk2 and gtk3 to latest versions
Actual Results:
There are some icons missing in thunar, xfce panel, evince,...

Expected Results:
Missing oxygen icons are replaced with gnome icons

Are you saying that GNOME icon themes have an "Inherits=hicolor,oxygen" line? That sounds wrong to me. Both themes should inherit from hicolor only.

Comment 3 David Rosenstrauch 2014-03-07 14:50:49 UTC
This is still an issue, even in KDE 4.12.3. Perhaps someone could get a fix implemented for this soon? (I.e., "Inherits=hicolor,gnome")
Comment 4 Christoph Feck 2014-03-07 15:06:04 UTC
David, you did not answer comment #1.
Comment 5 David Rosenstrauch 2014-03-07 15:11:22 UTC
"Are you saying that GNOME icon themes have an "Inherits=hicolor,oxygen" line?"

??? I don't know how to answer that question. Or understand why it's relevant, actually. I'm not suggesting making changes to gnome icon theme packages. I'm suggesting changing the KDE oxygen-icons theme. It doesn't seem to work correctly (missing icons) unless you include the dependency on gnome.

Are you suggesting that there's another (more correct) way to fix this issue? If so, what would that be?
Comment 6 Christoph Feck 2014-03-07 19:24:51 UTC
It is relevant, because I could not find a reference for why we suddenly need to add cross-desktop names in theme files. If there is, however, a freedesktop.org specification suggesting that it should be done, then I am interested in the progress on the "other side".
