updated yesterday and declined upgrade of configuration (iirc). booting today until what usually would be the kdm login screen, I was greeted by an error dialog
"Cannot open theme file /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/spacefun" 
with the only choice being "OK" which sent me back to the console login prompt.

that's not really a solution. whatever happend to the configured theme file, KDM should not send users to the console, but fall back to some default theme still allowing graphical login (and starting the DE afterwards).

don't know which KDM version this is eactly (and why it isn't either part of the query or selected automatically), but the debian package is version 4:4.8.4-2
