Hi,

this bug has been there in the past and something about it has been fixed. I do not know any bug number, sorry.

While this is working most ogf the time time, I just got an email where it still does NOT work.

Displaying that email works quite fine for that particular email, but when I hit the reply button, all text that is transferred to the composer as quote is decoded twice or sowmthing like that producing strings like "ä" for a german a-umlaut (ä) for example.

I had a quick look at the mail headers like "Content-Type:" and the Content-Type of the mime parts.

It seems like kmail (-composer?) fails at understanding/decoding special crafted (nested?) mime attachements . I have compared a working mail and a non working mail, which both are quite similar and noticed the following differences:

mutt does it all right

Are you sure that you don't have problem with your charset ?
Here is fine.

Look at configure->editor->charset
I have:
us-ascii
iso-8859-1
utf8(local)
utf8

Please screenshot after your "r" on your ano.mbox please.

I unchecked it. Now it looks correct!  Thanks!

But: Should we nevertheless consider that a bug? Because when viewing the original mail all looks correct. Only the composer does something to the text that is not entirely correct when this setting is enabled.

Or: Why should someone enable that setting? Should it perhaps be removed?

Same problem here. The email below (anonymised a bit) doesn't work - it is displayed correctly, but when replying, the characters in the quoted message are messed up.
The box "when replying, keep original message charset if possible" was checked in the settings. When I uncheck it, the bug is not present and everything works fine.

Same problem. Suspected the encoding list that has us-ascii at the top, but moving UTF-8 there did not help. Only removing the 'Keep the encoding' option helps.

It happens to me too, very often. Hebrew text, when quoted in a reply, is garbled and unreadable. I'm not sure about English or other languages.

Still confirmed for 5.12.2 (as of openSUSE Tumbleweed 20191014).

Unchecking "Keep original charset..." fixed it, but since this option is enabled by default, it would probably be a good idea to change the default until this issue is finally fixed.

Are you sure about that? I tested KMail 18.08 and current git master, and in both cases "Keep original charset..." was unchecked by default.

Anyway, I simplified the mail attached in Comment 2 a bit (see below).

Findings (with "Keep original charset..." checked):
- "Content-Type: multipart/mixed;" is necessary to reproduce
- after removing the "€" symbol (first line), "können" is not garbled anymore

Fix fallback path in MessageFactoryNG::applyCharset

In the case that the codec of the original message could not encode the reply,
it was still set as charset but the body encoded with the fallback codec.
This resulted in replies having messed up encoding.
It can be triggered by replying to multipart mails which define the charset
in parts only or if the reply template ends up with other special characters.
