Comment 1 Stephan Kulow 2012-02-01 14:36:24 UTC
It can only be racist if it refers to people, but this refers to a game of solitaire.
Comment 2 Thomas Fasching 2012-02-01 15:01:00 UTC
ok, so ill go shopping for some "nigger kisses".

oh no wait, the name for this cookie has been forbidden. :o
Comment 3 Stephan Kulow 2012-02-01 15:06:08 UTC
The name is not forbidden, companies just don't use it because companies love political correctness - I don't.

"In Österreich wird der Schokokuss auch Schwedenbombe genannt, im Bayerischen Wald Bumskopf."

So get some Schwedenbombe - I'm sure, the swedish don't mind.

maybe someone higher up in the hierarchy will care more about a racial slur being used as a game name.

you are obviously the wrong person to talk to.

There is no hierarchy here.

I brought this issue to the German translators mailing list and we will discuss it.

I am with Stephan here. Renaming a game (or an app in general) just because its name is considered "politically incorrect" in some country is not an option. But as German translators, we might do something. I am not familiar with the usage of the word "Zigeuner" and thus do not consider it offensive.

In case you want to join the discussion there -> https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-i18n-de

But please consider adjusting your attitude to keep the discussion calm and to the point.

FWIW, there was a discussion on IRC about this kicked off by Jonathan Riddell from Kubuntu/Canonical, and I wrote an email to the Deutsches Spielkartenmuseum http://www.spielkartenmuseum.de/) asking them for an expert opinion. Basically I sent them the German handbook entry covering the rules for "Zigeuner" and asked them if they know of any politically less charged name for the variant.

Let's rename it to "Sinti und Roma" then and make sure there is no *schnitzel or *soße anywhere in KDE. After it got fixed in KDE, re-assign to wikipedia etc. who still use the term for food without stating that whoever uses the word even for non-human things is a racist.

Good idea Eike. Please keep us posted. :)
