- What I was doing when the application crashed: deleting installed panel when crash occurred; was going to reload default panel, after boot issues occurred; in previous session, the application launcher menu seemed to stop working (happened before causing complete reload of system). When restarted machine, strange message came up (as before) saying (something like) "oxygen theme not found" and X server crashed. Rebooted to diagnostic mode in grub, and logged in as root, created new user, and restarted. Got "Verne" login screen and was able to get to original user account. Since the Application launcher menu icon was missing, I deleted the panel causing the crash.   

- Unusual behavior I noticed: Original problem appeared when running apper software management (loading software). This is where all the problems started. I don't know which file caused the problem. I will have to deselect some of the software depositories that may have experimental software in them.
