Description Tristan Miller 2011-08-27 09:33:37 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.0)
OS: Linux

If the user has the temerity to disable Nepomuk through the System Settings, then every time he subsequently logs in he gets a system notification of this trying to convince him that disabling Nepomuk was a Bad Thing.

If the user manually disables Nepomuk, please automatically disable this notification. Users who disable Nepomuk probably know exactly what they're doing and what the consequences are, and it's patronizing and annoying for them to be told over and over again that they're wrong. After all, if I disable my screensaver, I don't get a system notification every time I log in warning me that the screensaver is disabled and reminding me that I'm now in terrible danger of monitor burn-in.

(A related issue was already raised as Bug 227791 when the same warning was displayed as a pop-up. The "fix" for this was to change the warning to a notification, which didn't solve the underlying problem.)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Disable Nepomuk.
2. Log out.
3. Log in.

Actual Results:
4. System notification is displayed (and possibly heard as well, depending on the user's settings) warning the user that Nepomuk is disabled.

Expected Results:
4. No system notification should have been displayed.

Please reserve this notification for the case where Nepomuk is enabled but fails to start.

I should add that there doesn't seem to be any way of manually disabling this notification, either. It shows up as a "KDE Workspace" notification, but there's no corresponding entry in that section of the System Notification Configuration. The only thing that looks relevant elsewhere is the "Failed to start Nepomuk" notification under "Semantic Desktop", but disabling this doesn't suppress the nag message.

There is: enable nepomuk in systemsettings

Is there a way to disable both Nepomuk and the notification that Nepomuk is not running?

If not, what is the point of allowing the user to disable Nepomuk in the first place?

Please fill a wish report against the nepomuk product

Is the notification message referred to in this bug report being generated by Nepomuk or by Akonadi?
