Description Georg Wittenburg 2011-08-10 12:08:17 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.0)
OS: Linux

My laptop (running on battery power with a reasonably full battery) suspends while Amarok is playing music. In fact, this behavior corresponds to the word to the default settings the the power profile ("suspend after x minutes of inactivity"). However, I feel this situation should be handled differently, since in my opinion a running music playback does not qualify as inactivity. Furthermore, I think it's a reasonable expectation that a laptop running on battery should play music without too much twiddling (e.g., having to change the power profile when playing music on batteries).

I'm quite sure that this isn't an Amarok-specific problem (unless case 1) below applies). However, I'm unsure which KDE component to file this against (PowerDevil? Phonon?). So feel free to reassign this bug report.

I guess there are generally two ways on how to proceed on this:
1) If there's an API for disabling "suspend on inactivity" (possibly similar to disabling the screen saver when playing a video), Amarok (or Phonon?) should make the appropriate calls to that API.
2) If there's no such API, it should be added (to PowerDevil?) and Amarok (or Phonon?) should make the appropriate calls.

FWIW, I'm running recent Amarok/KDE packages from Kubuntu Natty backports.

Reproducible: Always

Expected Results:
Music playback should continue even if the laptop is running on batteries.

Where do you see this string: "suspend after x minutes of inactivity"? This is apparently misleading since it means inactivity from the user, not from applications. But I can't see this string in the Power settings anywhere, at least not in KDE 4.7.0 on Kubuntu 11.04 or 11.10.

The setting in question is at System Settings -> Power Management ->
Power Profiles.

However, the point of this wish list item is not that this setting is
misleading (and shout be rephrased). The point of this wish list item is
that with the current stack of Amarok/Phonon/PowerDevil/KDE, a laptop on
batteries will suspend after x minutes while music is playing. This is,
imho, not the desirable behavior.

As I said in the original report, Amarok may not be the place to fix it.
If so, please reassign as appropriate.
