Description Kai Uwe Broulik 2011-05-29 23:01:58 UTC
Version: unspecified (using Devel)
OS: Linux

With the old panel shadows, windows could cover a panel shadow which made it really nice looking, so when a window is maximized, there would be no distracting shadow ontop of the respective window and when moving a window to the panel it would cover the shadow where the window is. With the new shadow system the Panel draws a shadow all the time. It should at least hide its shadow when a window is maximized on the screen where the panel is.
Martin already told me that this is not easy to implement and it is actually some wanted or “not-fixed” thing, so I put this on wishlist. (There is no “new-shadow-system” category?)

Reproducible: Always

I've also noticed this bug. It happens only with XRender compositing type, not OpenGL.

This is actually no bug, but currently the wanted and expected behavior
>It happens only with XRender compositing type, not OpenGL.
If it does not happen with OpenGL then that is a bug

I too find the shadows overlaying maximized windows very distracting. Is there a way to let the user choose whether to have this behavior or not?

I am using OpenGL for rendering here, and I also have the same issue.
What I find particularly irritating is that it cannot be disabled (even when window shadows are disabled, the shadow is still there).

Given the feedback we received over the last year it seems to be no real issue. Most users seem to be satisfied with the shadow above the windows so I think it is not worth the effort to change that again.

Nevertheless I want to thank you for the change request and highlighting a possible issue.
