Description andreluizromano 2011-05-13 01:19:41 UTC
Version: 2.4.0 (using KDE 4.6.2)
OS: Linux

Hello,

[PROBLEM]:
Sometimes when I play a music I can't seek it... This had happened in a lot of musics of mine, so I think this is a bug in Amarok 2.4.0 and not in my musics data... Besides, this error was not happening in Amarok 2.3.2...

[WORKAROUND]:
Restart the playback of the music (by double clicking or pressing stop and play buttons)...

Thanks for your help,

André M.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1 - Play a music
2 - Check if you see the square (it moving as the music play) that let's your seek the music in the slide - sometimes this square don't show up, and (without it) you can't seek the music

Actual Results:
Sometimes can seek the music with the square that indicates the actual position of the music playblack... Sometimes can't seek the music because this square don't show up to the user...

Expected Results:
Seek the music without needing to restart the playback - the square (that indicates the actual position of the music playback) should show up always to the user

PS: This problem did not happened in Amarok 2.3.2 (that I used in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 10.10)...

Comment 3 andreluizromano 2011-05-14 16:53:42 UTC
Hello Myriam Schweingruber,

How can I upgrade to Amarok 2.4.1? When I searched about upgrading
Amarok I discovered that I needed to add a Repository that contained
application in BETA stage. So, if I install Amarok by this repository,
will I have problems because it's in BETA stage of development?

Is there any official repository to the latest stable version of Amarok
to Ubuntu?

Thanks for your help,

certainly not a beta, Amarok 2.4.1 is released since last Sunday, so it is in the kubuntu backports PPA, not in the beta PPA anyway. There was just no official announce yet on http://kubuntu.org

The PPA you need to add is this one: https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/backports

Hello,

I've installed Amarok 2.4.1 from Kubuntu Backports ppa, but the error
persists like you can see in the image attached...

Thanks for your help,

This error still persists, but now it DON'T HAPPENS to EVERY music like it did...
I could only verify this error in only two music files I have until now... It could be related to ID3 since I didn't checked the ID3 of these files like I did with the others...
Comment 8 andreluizromano 2011-05-15 00:29:12 UTC
This error is not related to ID3 tag info...

PS: The error stops happening if the user presses the left or right arrow, making the slide show up in all music files...

Did you try changing the phonon backend you use?
Comment 10 andreluizromano 2011-05-15 16:40:40 UTC
How can I do it?

What's the difference between these backends (what is a backend)?

What is Phonon?

Thanks for your help and sorry by the tons of questions...
Comment 12 Myriam Schweingruber 2011-05-15 18:46:11 UTC
Amarok doesn't handle sound itself, it lets Phonon do that, which is the framework for sound in KDE, see also http://phonon.kde.org/

There are various backends for phonon, the two recommended ones are phonon-backend-gstreamer and phonon-backend-vlc currently.

You just need to install the backends, then choose the backend to use in the Amarok Menu settings -> Configure Amarok -> Playback -> Phonon configuration. Then restart Amarok and check if that solves the problem.

FWIW, you can find all this information yourself by searching in the web :)

Thanks for the information and patient with my lack of knowledge... I searched the info that your provided, but I couldn't find it so well explained as you did... Thanks again :D

The problem appears to be solved only when VLC Phonon backend is used... I'll test this issue with more songs to check it out...

Best Regards,

This issue it only happening with GStreamer Phonon backend... I can run my music files normally with both XINE and VLC backends...
Comment 15 andreluizromano 2011-05-16 02:21:25 UTC
PS: I'm having some problems in the playback of my music files with VLC... In the beginning of the playback some music files I can hear a noise in the sound and when I close Amarok, the sound that it was supposed to playback is clipped...

IMHO, the VLC Phonon backend is not stable enough to be used as default backend...

For me, XINE (that has not been developed with the efficiency of other backends) and GSTREAMER (the unique problem that this backend has is the Seek Bar) work better until now...
Comment 16 Myriam Schweingruber 2011-05-16 09:03:27 UTC
Well, that is not resolved, but a gstreamer backend bug then, reassigning.

Please take discussion to the forum or to irc, a bug tracker is not the correct place for that.

my observations for this bug:
- it seems reproducible on specific mp3 files which always fail to seek and others where seeking always works.
Those might be mp3-encoded slightly different? maybe stereo vs joint stereo or similar issue?
- the problem vanishes when switching to xine back end.

Comment 19 andreluizromano 2011-06-01 23:45:31 UTC
Hello Christian,

Let me clarify somethings...

Possible Causes to the Problem: A information in the music is wrongly
read by GStreamer Phonon Backend... You can check this because if you
change the Phonon Backend to any other backend (Xine, VLC or other),
this issue will disappear... It can be caused by any info like
Frequency, Duration, etc that GStreamer Phonon backend can't read
properly, causing this backend to misunderstand the Seek Property of
these files...

This problem is NOT CAUSED BY: ID3 info (I removed all ID3 from my music
files and the issue continued happening), Joint Stereo (Most of my music
files are in this type of MP3 and don't have this issue), Stereo (I have
some music in this type that this issue don't happen)

PS: This issue is happening in the newest version of Gstreamer Backend...

PS²: I'm reporting this issue with Gstreamer into Launchpad and I'll put
the link here...

PS³: Since now, the only Phonon Backend that works properly with AMAROK
and my MP3 music files is XINE... The VLC backend is having some issues
in the playback of some music files (in the beginning of the file it
clips the music, creating some strange sounds - like if the music has
some interference in it's original melody)...

Thanks for your help,
