Description Cyril Brosch 2011-04-06 22:08:01 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.1)
OS: Linux

When you open the widget explorer, you probably either want to install a new widget or chose an existing one. For the first one you have to do some clicks anyway, but for the second one there is a shiny search field which makes it easy to find the plasmoid quickly - or better: it would, because you first have to click in it in order to give it focus.
For me this is so counter-intuitive, that I always start typing right away just to see that nothing happens. With some "oh not again"-feeling I have to go back to the mouse, click, and type everything again.

I know, this is just a very very small paper-cut, but it would do nice little polishing to Plasma if someone could make that search field auto-focused. :-)

Reproducible: Didn't try
Comment 1 Nikos Papas 2011-04-11 12:11:11 UTC
I can confirm the same behaviour in 4.6.2. When I click on "Add widgets", the cursor automatically goes to the search field and blinks, but when I try to type something, nothing happens. I have to click the mouse there in order to start typing. This is very strange (!), since the search field is already focused.
Comment 2 Cyril Brosch 2011-04-11 12:18:57 UTC
Oh, this is interesting, up to 4.6.1 the field wasn't focused, something like "type query here" or so was written in it.
Now in 4.6.2 it appears to be focused, but isn't, so this is no wish anymore, but a bug.
Comment 3 Nikos Papas 2011-04-11 12:22:28 UTC
Yes, this should be changed to a bug.
Comment 4 Steven Sroka 2011-05-16 16:53:25 UTC
I can confirm this with 4.6.2 (and I'm almost certain this exists in 4.6.3).

The textbox has focus, but not keyboard focus.
Comment 5 Alvaro Manuel Recio Perez 2011-05-31 12:54:34 UTC
I can confirm it in 4.6.3 and also in 4.7 Beta 1.
Comment 6 Nikolay Rysev 2011-09-02 09:56:48 UTC
Yes, that's annoying.

Same here on KDE 4.7.0.
Comment 7 Gregor Tätzner 2011-09-29 08:45:13 UTC
here is the patch where the issue was addressed...unsuccessful, obviously ;)

Although it was already mentioned in the mail in comment#7, no other comment here noted this so far:

Please make sure to fix this bug not only in the Add Applets panel, but also in the Activity panel.
Comment 13 Reza 2011-12-15 01:59:58 UTC
I tested against master.
Seems the focus handling works for me.
Please check again.

Also works for me after rebuilding kde-workspace from the master code.
Comment 15 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2011-12-15 11:46:38 UTC
Does not work as expected in KDE master: indeed there is a blinking cursor in the "Add Widget" field but you must click in it before entering anything. I don't call a blinking cursor "focus": when I open the search field, I must click before it accepts any string.
Expected: typing anything is straightforward entered in the field.

Reopening.
Comment 16 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2011-12-15 12:50:50 UTC
OK talking with Reza on IRC we realized that the Search field has no focus when used from the cashew.
When you right click on the desktop and choose "Add Widgets..." the focus is there but not when you click on the cashew and choose "Add widgets..."

For me, this problem seems to be fixed in 4.8 RC1 (4.7.95), also when using the cashew "Add widget..." link.
Comment 19 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2012-01-03 19:20:14 UTC
No, using the cashew, the Add Widget has a blinking cursor but has no focus in the sense of you cannot enter any letter. You need to click your mouse cursor on the widget area in order to be able to enter any letter. Master today, post RC1.
All other "Add Widgets" items work, except the cashew.

Comment 22 Saurabh Asthana 2012-01-23 18:23:57 UTC
This bug is still present for me with 4.7.4, no matter how I try to add widgets - right click the desktop, use the cashew 'add widget' link, etc. The cursor is always blinking, implying focus, but I have to click to start typing. Also, this dialog behaves very badly with focus-follows-mouse, but that's probably a separate bug.
Comment 23 Gregor Tätzner 2012-01-28 13:43:48 UTC
For me this issue is finally fixed on 4.8/master. I can't reproduce it, neither with the cashew nor with the other Add widget options. Anybody else?
Comment 24 Cyril Brosch 2012-01-28 15:09:10 UTC
For me with 4.8.0 (OpenSuse packages) it works when called from the cashew or right click on desktop, but not when called from the panel (which is vertical, although I don't think this is of importance here).
Comment 25 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2012-01-28 15:21:04 UTC
Indeed it does not work with the panel toolbox which I called wrongly "cashew" in my comment #19
Comment 26 Nikos Papas 2012-01-28 22:41:29 UTC
I can confirm the same behaviour on my computer as in comment #24. Using 4.8, kubuntu packages.

Same issue as described in comment #1 confirmed using KDE 4.8.1 from ArchLinux packages.
Comment 29 Cyril Brosch 2012-05-22 13:50:26 UTC
Just checked against 4.8.3, still there with the panel.
Comment 30 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2012-06-07 13:27:08 UTC
Still present in 4.9Beta 1
Comment 31 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2012-06-07 13:36:38 UTC
Using a panel Tool Box, the first time you choose "Add Widgets..." you do not have the focus but if you enter something in the field, you will get focus the next times. So it's only the first time that is the problem.
Comment 32 Martin Bříza 2012-06-20 08:05:20 UTC
This bug is also reported in the Red Hat Bugzilla for Fedora 16 (KDE SC 4.7.4) on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801609
Comment 33 Reza 2012-07-07 13:25:06 UTC
seems with latest implementation this problem is fixed.
tested from:
- add widget from panel right clicking
- add widget from panel toolbox icon
- add widget from right click at desktop
- add widget from right click at toolbox icon at desktop
Comment 34 Reza 2012-07-09 09:57:24 UTC
These behaviour almost perfect.

These failed only from second monitor. There is no problem at main monitor.

Right click on panel > Panel Options > Add Widgets: Works as expected.
Panel toolbox icon > Add Widgets: Still isn't working as expected.
Right click on Desktop > Add Widgets: Works as expected.
Toolbox icon on Desktop > Add widgets: Works as expected.

It seems that perhaps it has improved but still isn't perfect.
Comment 36 invertedrat 2012-07-10 07:50:26 UTC
Right click on panel > Panel Options > Add Widgets: Works as expected.
Panel toolbox icon > Add Widgets: Still isn't working as expected.
Right click on Desktop > Add Widgets: Works as expected.
Toolbox icon on Desktop > Add widgets: Works as expected.

It seems that perhaps it has improved but still isn't perfect.
Comment 37 Reza 2012-07-13 06:25:43 UTC
I can confirm this.
But not easy to reproduce. Sometime the next time we open widget explorer, search field focus works properly.
(In reply to comment #36)
> Panel toolbox icon > Add Widgets: Still isn't working as expected.

And seems as of today, the search field focus works properly from second monitor.
If you have second monitor, can you confirm if it's working for you too?
Comment 38 invertedrat 2012-07-13 08:53:49 UTC
Sorry, but I have just one monitor here.
Comment 39 Nikolay Rysev 2012-08-30 07:19:29 UTC
Works for me on 4.9 with all use-cases (i.e. panel, desktop, second monitor).
Anyone?
Comment 40 Luke 2012-08-30 09:02:04 UTC
Yep, works OK here too.
Comment 41 Cyril Brosch 2012-08-31 19:50:24 UTC
Confirmed :-)
Comment 42 Bhushan Shah 2013-07-19 05:52:44 UTC
I think this bug is resolved!
Comment 43 Luis Fernando Planella Gonzalez 2013-07-19 11:51:02 UTC
I'm using Kubuntu 13.04 with KDE 4.10.5 and I can confirm that it works for the desktop toolbox, but NOT for the panel toolbox. Adding widgets on panel still doesn't focus the search field.
Maybe it was patched downstream by some other distro?
Comment 44 rockonthemoonfm 2013-11-14 10:31:13 UTC
@43: same here on Arch and version 4.11.3: Panel Toolbox Widget browser doesn't autofocus, Toolbox Widget browser does.

so I ask to REOPEN this bug for SC4 Plasma.

that is another reason to unify Panel Toolbox and Toolbox Widget browsers in a single semi-modal widget in Plasma-Next.
