When having multiple activities running with various applications and you trigger the Present Windows effect (no Grid :P) there are all windows from all activities except that the windows from other activities are invisible. But they still are respected when positioning the others and they react to clicking on them.
So for example you have three windows on one activity and one on the other. Then you trigger the effect, and they are arranged in a 2x2 grid and clicking the empty spot results in focussing the window that is on the other activity and switching to it.
There should also be an option “Only show windows from this activitiy“.
