Screenshot that shows the behaviour.

Version: unspecified (using Devel)
OS: Linux

Note I use openSUSE packages for KDE 4.5.2 but that was not yet selectable as the KDE-Version.
Initiallly, folderview worked fine. Then, out of curiosity i changed the activity type to Search and Launch Containment, to show it a friend. After switching back to the default Desktop containment, the folderview I had in there was gone or showed only the icon, I cant remember anymore, sorry.
I tried removing and readding the folderview, changing containment-types multiple times but no avail. All I ever get out of folderview is a big ugly icon. When I click on it it shows the folder contents, like it was embedded in a Panel. I think the problem may be, that the Folderview thinks its inside a panel or a containment that has no space to display the contents directly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Happens every time on my system, but did not have a chance to reproduce it on other systems.

Expected Results:
The folderview should show the contents on the desktop as normal.

I forgot to say: For testing I added other widgets to the desktop to see if they suffer from the same problem. But as you see in the screenshot this is not the case. So it seems to only be a problem in the folderview widget.

Can you reproduce this in 4.8? I can not reproduce it in master.
Comment 5 edgar.sanders 2012-05-17 17:12:45 UTC
I'm having the exact same problem in kubuntu 12.04, kde 4.8. All I did was change the desktop to "find and launch" (or something like that) but when I switched back to Folder view it only showed a big desktop icon. Then I switched to Desktop, added a folder view widget and it was showing only the icon, filling the space of the widget.

Showing desktop in "folder view" mode. Big icon, weird wallpaper.

If I click on it, it shows the contents in a popup

I can confirm the bug. Fortunately, changing the desktop mode to Search & Launch seems to break the Folder View for the current *activity* only, not the user session, thus making it safe to try to reproduce the bug in a new activity then removing it.

Comment 9 Sami Boukortt 2012-09-08 16:39:32 UTC
It was in 4.9.0 but for some reason, I can’t seem to reproduce it anymore, even in the same version.
Comment 10 Kai Uwe Broulik 2012-09-08 16:44:58 UTC
Couldn’t reproduce. I created a new activity, added a folderview, changed to SAL, changed back. Except that the widget was moved to the bottom of the screen (becasue SAL is not suited for widgets) the widget worked fine. (4.9.0)

Thank you both for the feedback.

Same problem on Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 12.10 with KDE 4.9.2

The bug is seen in 4.10 but it is marked as solved in previous versions. WTF?
Comment 15 Ignat Semenov 2013-02-09 11:12:23 UTC
First of all, please, I'd like to ask you to refrain from using profane language, thank you.

Second, I couldn't reproduce this issue in master, as said above, hence I marked the bug as WORKSFORME. Please note that RESOLVED - WORKSFORME means the developer can not reproduce the bug, whereas what you are referring to is called RESOLVED - FIXED - i.e. some code or other kind of modifications were applied in order to solve the issue.

However, my bad, I haven't marked this as REOPENED yet after you reported the issue this morning. Thank you for the reminder! Reopening.

SAL is to blame for this bug.

In SAL::constraintsEvent() formFactorForLocation() is called, which returns either Horizontal or Vertical formfactors, both functions' code happily ignoring the case when SAL is acting as a containment. Will be an easy fix.
Comment 17 Aaron J. Seigo 2013-02-12 17:14:28 UTC
should be fixed with commits 79a2048 and 28341in kdelibs.

problem was that formfactor was being preserved in the configuration between containment changes.

Same thing on KDE 4.9.5, Fedora 18 (3.7.6-201-fc18x86_64).

However, on my other machine, running kernel 3.7.8-202-fc18x86_64), I don't have the same problem.

Just upgraded the kernel on the second machine. I still can't see the transparent folder as I do on the first; The big, ugly icon didn't go away. Drat.

Furthermore, although this is a different bug, I thought that I'd mention it here just as an FYI (to emphasize that the gremlins are kicking about in this program): When re-booting, all of the folder links within the Folder View disappear. I've discovered that a quick ALT+F5 does the trick to bring them back as they were. Alas, ALT+F5 doesn't resolve the first problem :-(
Comment 20 Ignat Semenov 2013-02-19 16:30:26 UTC
This bug is not related to the kernel.

It is fixed now. After you upgrade your kdelibs to the next 4.10 release which contains the fix, the bug may persist since the configuration file plasma-desktop-appletsrc still contains the old formFactor value for the containment. Locate the [Containments] section with plugin=folderview and find the formFactor=2 record in it, change that to formFactor=0. Configuration fixed.
