Description Vadym Krevs 2010-03-08 10:24:51 UTC
Version: unknown (using 4.3.5 (KDE 4.3.5) "release 3", KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop / openSUSE_11.2)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.31.12-0.1-default

Last Friday I added 3 new links to applications to the Folder View widget on my desktop, and went home leaving the machine on.

Over the weekend, electricians turned off the power supply :-( at the office. When I powered on the machine on Monday, and logged on, there were two strange things with the Folder View.

1. The Folder View widget was rendered empty on the desktop - no icons were visible. However, hovering with the mouse cursor over the widget revealed icons (made icons visible again).

2. None of the icons I had added on Friday were present in the Folder View!!! Then I right-clicked inside the Folder View and selected "Open with Dolphin". Dolphin opened, and surprise - the .desktop files corresponding to the new application links were still there, yet the folder view would not display them. I had to right-click on each .desktop file, select Properties and then manually change the name and description fields on the Application tab in order for the FolderView widget to recognize these as present and valid .desktop files. Even then it initially placed each icon under a random already existing icon.

It seems as if the Folder View widget does not immediately persist its changes to disk (or some settings are not saved until logoff from kde), which is why all this mayhem has occurred.

The same had also happened to me at home - after my machine failed to resume from suspend - last Folder view changes got lost.

i don't think this has anything to do with changes being saved and much more likely to do with desktop:/ not returning all values as expected. what is the Folder View set to view? (e.g. "Desktop folder")

also, in future please describe the problem itself rather than what you think the cause to be when filling in the Summary field for a bug report. thanks :)

The Folder View is set to "Show the Desktop folder".

This bug was fixed in KDE 4.4.
