Description aapgorilla 2009-04-22 22:25:21 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

In folderview(the desktop activity? as opposed to the view were you can't see your files like you normally can) some (not all) files and/or directories just disappear.

Sometimes hovering the mouse over the area is enough to get them on the desktop but sometimes you even need to open the filemanager and rename them to get them back (rebooting or refreshing the desktop is not enough)

ping, still a problem with 4.3.2

not enough information; screenshots, concrete methods to reproduce, etc. will be required to even start troubleshooting this one.

How can I make a screenshot of something not there?

How to reproduce? Right click desktop->select folder view setting->appearance-> Type dropdown list: select folder view.

Place several directories and files on the desktop, restart and notice that at times they are absent.

This isn't some fluke random thing happening it happens on 3 different installs and on 2 distros (buntu and mandriva)

take "before" and "after" screenshots of the whole desktop. there may be useful clues in there.

> Place several directories and files on the desktop

how are you placing those files/directories on the desktop, exactly?

> This isn't some fluke random thing happening

nobody said it was; this still doesn't make the report obvious without more explanatory information, however. reports need to be really, really specific and detailed to be handled properly by the developers. thanks.

I have uploaded 2 screenshots this is with 2 temp files missing. But any kind of file (eg. like OOO documents, archives, text files, folders, image files, png's jpg's etc) can be missing at some time. The files where either downloaded from the net, created by kwrite, extracted archives etc. etc.. moved by the filemanager.

I don't know if this is useful but I use kde4 with gnome or xfce (depending on the machine both I do not have machines with both xfce and kde4), though I do not see any relation with booting into those enviroments (iirc I have seen it too when I still had only kde4 but not 100% sure)

I've the same and more on KDE 4.3.2:

desktop activity/folderview is buggy: when the panel is located fixed on the left edge of the screen then the icons in folderview move the width of the panel to the left every time I log in, which leads to disappearing icons after some sessions. This occures in all KDE4 releases I've tested.

folderview is buggy: location, placement of icons & size of plasmoid are constantly "forgotten" on logout. that happens randomy, I cannot give any rule when it happens or why, but if it happens it happens all the time and there is no way of getting rid of it.

Currently Using: 4.3.85 (KDE 4.3.85 (KDE 4.4 Beta2)) "release 203"
Had similar problem which I reported in Bug 218603. I had installed my openSuSE 11.2 with just two Desktops. I wanted to get the fancy turned, or cocked windows displayed on my Desktop. Still haven't figured out how to do it, -but- in reading the Docs and Comments it appeared that I had to have 4 or more desktops in order to get the effect. So, I increased my Desktops to 4 and ... Wham! My Background was changed and everything was 'wiped' from my Desktop. Fortunately, my Task Bar stayed working and I could do something. Appears that my monitor went from Folder View to Desktop View.

Once again investigating Kwin and crooked windows; in the Online Instructions you are told to Right-click on the Desktop and select Desktop Settings. Well in this version it doesn't say that. It says "Folder View Activity Settings". You Left-click on that and the Left-click on Activity. Right now at this moment mine has a Selection Type Bar that says "Folder View". Then under that the name says Desktop. Now, as I read all this, I should have a Folder on my desktop with icons in it. Instead I have the whole desktop, as in KDE3.5, with icons on it. And as a reminder:
1. Installed openSuSE 11.2 System with KDE4.3 and only two Desktops.
2. Changed to 4.3.81 (KDE 4.3.81 (KDE 4.4 >= 20091204)) "release 2" 13 Dec 09.
3. Changed to 4.3.85 (KDE 4.3.85 (KDE 4.4 Beta2)) "release 203" 25 Dec 09.
4. Changed from 2 to 4 Desktops. 26 Dec 09..... problems!
I now have a KDE3.5 type view of my Desktop.

I cannot reproduce this bug using KDE SC 4.3.4 and Qt 4.5.3
Comment 11 aapgorilla 2010-01-12 15:53:49 UTC
Still problematic with both kde4.3.4 w/qt4.5.3 on mandriva 32 bit and kde 4.4rc1 with qt4.6.0 64 bits

There is no proper way to reproce except to place some files/folders on your desktop and suddenly noticing the icons are gone, it doesn't happen always

SVN commit 1073823 by fredrik:

- Ignore icons that haven't been laid out yet when searching for an
  empty position in the grid.
- Mark icons that didn't have a saved position as laid out after
they've been laid out in the post layout pass.
- Remove an early return that caused the icon view to not be repainted
after the post layout pass was completed.

Fixed for: KDE 4.4 RC2
