Version: (using KDE 4.4.1) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages After some usage tasks in taskbar(task manager) get all mixed up. Exact steps to reproduce this are unknown to me. When that happens whole plasma start acting weird. If i try to remove ANY widget from panel nothing happens! I will attach a picture to show how it look like. If there is anything else i can do please tell me. I have installed over 300mb of debugging symbol packages, if there is a way to give you more information I would be more than willing. Also i run plasma desktop with "-graphicssystem raster" argument, if that could cause the problem?

> If i try to remove ANY widget from panel nothing happens! can you describe this a bit more, please? e.g. can you right click on a widget and select "Remove this.."? do mouse over hovers work? does it happen when you don't use "-graphicssystem raster"? from the screenshot it looks like the layout (and potentially the entire interface) is getting stuck in a loop and frozen.
- "can you right click on a widget and select "Remove this.."?" yes i can, but when I click remove widget nothing happens. This is true for any widget in the panel - "do mouse over hovers work?" yes it does, i can click on tasks and switch between them. also, some other widgets behave strange, for example pastebin widget keeps circulating animation, even if it finishes its yob. i am now going back to the default plasma desktop without "-graphicssystem raster" and will get back here in a few days to inform you if problem has reoccurred.
The bug reappears even if plasma is started without "-graphicssystem raster" argument. I am thinking about killing plasma and starting it from terminal, so that i could copy and paste output that it gives next time problem occurs. Would that be more helpful ? One more note, when bug happens, every widget works, but can't be removed. This applies for panel and desktop widgets.
Same here, started with KDE 4.4.0. Happens at times when I close a window. Taskbar buttons are still active (I can for example minimize or maximize windows).

- Isn't this related to bug 224447 / bug 226355 ? Regards

Please change status to "Confirmed" as several people now have reported about this. Problem seen here on Gentoo/X86_64 with KDE 4.4.4, persisting all the time since 4.3.5 using the default "Task Manager" widget. Steps to reproduce: I cannot give a clear list of steps how to reproduce this problem, since it occurs rarely, and seems to be related with alphabetical sorting of the entries which is done *although* this should be turned off by setting (see below). I can only guess, but to me it seems this issue could be related to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=210166 This bug comes in two flavours: - In one instance, when closing a window the remaining taskbar entries stick in their position, leaving empty space on the left side of them, where they normally should have been moved. - In the second instance, when opening or closing windows sometimes two entries flip together and in the result overlap completely. Right clicking on these two entries gives me the popup menu for the top entry. My task manager settings: - 'Force row settings' checked, 'Maximum rows': 1 - Grouping: 'Do not group' - Sorting: 'By Desktop' - Filters: all ('Only show current desktop/current screen/minimized') unchecked Please also see the image I attached.

"In one instance, when closing a window the remaining taskbar entries stick in their position, leaving empty space on the left side of them, where they normally should have been moved." I observe such a behaviour when opening a hidden panel. On my desktop one of the panels has the "auto-hide" feature on. Sometimes, when a mouse nears the hidden panel, it slides open and at the same moment task buttons are moved right. It seems that the task manager is about to show an entry for this panel. It doesn't show up and the empty space remains until the taskbar rearranges the buttons some time later.
I see this bug *every* day. System starts off ok, but within an hour the task manager icons start overlapping, eventually it gets to a state where I'm forced to reboot as its unusuable. Its been happening for a while.
I also see it quite often, even in kde-4.5.3 along with many other anomalies in the taskbar widget. I wonder how such a critical component can be so buggy :/
Created attachment 53311 [details] Shows overlapping entries on task manager Snapshot of the bug on KDE 4.5.3 Any chance of this bug being confirmed and getting some attention? its been over a year now.
Blackpaw: I've files a few bug-reports about taskbar problems, but it seems this *essential* component is not really maintained. Instead of fantasising about OpenGL or social networking in plasma, I would prefer they would get they critical bugs (like this one, a bug in the *core* features of a DE) fixed.
Still present in 4.6B1
