Description Kern Sibbald 2010-01-03 11:24:58 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.4)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

In the new 4.0+ main menu, please make default or an option that permits avoiding to click on the borders of the menu to move to the next item. I would like to either have it the default or an option that permits me to move the mouse over the border area containing an error and have the menu automatically move to that item. This is the way the old menu system behaves and it avoids a lot of extra clicks that are necessary in the new 4.0 menu system.

To which "new 4.0 menu system" are you referring to ?- Can you post an screenshot ? Thanks

Yes, sorry, "main menu" is a bit vague, and unfortunately, I don't know how to get a screenshot since the menu disappears when I click to start the screen shot (I guess if I knew accelerator keys better it would be easy).

I am referring to the K Menu that pops up when you click on the gear containing a K in the lower left corner of the window on the task bar. This is what I call the "main menu" or some others call it the "Start" menu. In KDE 3.5, it pops up and as the mouse hovers over items and they are submenus, the submenu opens. In KDE 4.+, you must explicitly click to get submenus.
For example, it Contains on the bottom of the menu Favorates, Applications, Computer, Recently Used, and Leave (at least on Kubuntu). I must then click on one of those icons (no problem). Once the correct menu has popped up behind it, if it has a submenu, there is an arrow on the right side of the menu. I must then click that arrow to see the submenu. Once in the submenu say for (Applications -> Office), I can click on an item, but if I want to go back, I must click on the left arrow bar that appears on the left of the submenu.

What I want is a mode that is somewhat more like the old 3.5 menu system that allows me to switch submenus by putting the cursor over the left or right arrow (possibly an arrow bar) without having to click. This makes it *much* faster to traverse the menu system without a lot of clicks. I am not asking to change the current system only to add an option.

Hopefully this is clear. If not, can you tell me how to get a screen show of the menu items?

Thanks for the detailed explanation.
As a workaround you can use the "old-style" menu: unlock the Plasma widgets, rightclick the "K" menu icon and select "Switch to Classic Menu Style".
Regards

Thanks for the workaround. I'll follow bug 190395. Count me as one more vote for getting "Hover over" working.
