I want to be able to set the desktop background on a per-background basis.  For instance, each desktop could be set to have a different background color.

This feature worked very well in KDE3.  Multiple desktops could be configured using kcontrol.  It's very unfortunate that KDE4 took a big step backwards in this behavior.
