Description E.T. Anderson 2009-12-14 00:29:05 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.4)
Compiler: gcc 4.4.1
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I leave my email on the server because I have two computers accessing the messages.
Every once in a while (but three times in the past month, prompting this report), Kmail will re-download ALL my email messages. I cannot determine any trigger for this behavior.
I'm not sure what other information to add because this isn't a crash.

I can confirm this bug, switching from maildir to mbox does not affect this bug.
Comment 4 Kilian Lackhove 2010-04-21 00:14:33 UTC
i can confirm this bug on kde 4.4.2 kmail 1.13.2 on archlinux. It worked fine for serveral years, until a few months ago.

It never happened to me that all mails were downloaded again, but only the last few ones, so my problem is more like in Bug 222143.

I am using pop3.web.de.

Same here. The last present mail on the server gets redownloaded many times. This is since the update from kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, which means, kde 4.4.2
This does not happen with every pop3 account. I have 7 of them (on 2 computers), and only one has that problem. I deleted and reconfigured the account, and it still has the same problem
Comment 6 Beat Wolf 2010-05-17 20:44:46 UTC
I try to give some more details.
The pop3 account of my gf that causes the problem is on the same server as i have my account. I have no problem.
For her, when clicking on the check server capabilities button when configuring the server, makes an error message appear that sais that something is not supported by the server (i don't know the exact wording now, but i think its related to the UIDL command).
When i do the same, i don't get this error message.
I also checked with telnet, the UIDL command should work, here the output:
UIDL 1
+OK 1 1274105087.M476151P26230.mda99,W=1971

I'm no expert in pop3, but it looks like it works to me.

If i can give any further information, please tell me. I would be happy for any workaround also. Like disabling the UIDL stuff and just downloading the messages by date.

kmail also sometimes shows this error message:
Impossible de lire le fichier Réponse non valable du serveur :
« .
»..

which translates roughly to:
Impossible to read the invalid answer file from the server
« .
»..
Comment 8 Beat Wolf 2010-05-17 21:13:39 UTC
And here the error message i get when clicking on the check server capabilites button:

Le serveur ne semble pas gérer les numéros de messages uniques, mais c'est une exigence pour laisser les messages sur le serveur ; par conséquent, cette option a été désactivée.
Comme certains serveurs n'annoncent pas correctement leurs capacités, vous avez encore la possibilité d'activer la fonction prévue pour laisser les messages reçus sur le serveur.

which rougly translates to:
The server does not seem to manage unique message number, but this is required to keep the messages on the server. Fot this reason, that option has been deactivated.
Because certain servers d'ont announce correctly their capacities, you can still activate the option to keep the messages on the server.

That feature always worked until upgrading to kde 4.4.2...

I don't know how kmail works, but i guess it uses the CAPA command to find out what the user offers?

so i did that manualy, here the output (whole connection, sensible information is replaced with ****).

telnet mail.fryx.ch 110

Sorry for the overposting, but i really would like to get that fixed.
I can give out a test account if needed to test directly on the server.

thx for your help

I'm experiencing the same problem, with both messages "UIDL not supported" and "invalid answer". The last message from the POP account (leaving messages on server) gets downloaded multiple times, but not on every check.

This behavior started after upgrading from Kubuntu 9.10 to Kubuntu 10.04, never happened before.

The pop account is at gmx.at, using TLS and LOGIN.

I confirm this bug.

I confirm this bug on ubuntu 10.04 with same kde & kmail version.
Comment 15 Matt Casters 2010-07-07 19:56:55 UTC
This bug is confirmed on Kubuntu 10.04, KDE 4.4.5, Kontact 4.4.5
The bug is not caused by the server, clearly a Kontact/KMail issue.

I confirm this bug "invalid response from server".
It happens about two times on ten but sometimes does not for a longtime.
My OS is Kubuntu 10.04 and i found this very ennoying as it can last an entire morning sometimes... it is also quite strange!
This bug has to be fixed in the LTS version i believe.
I can help you if you want by giving whatever you need from my files in my computer.

I confirm this bug with KMail 1.13.2 / KDE 4.4.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS:
> It never happened to me that all mails were downloaded again, but only the last

I reported this in Bug 259178 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259178 .
To me it looks like, KDE 3.5 was not affected by this problem.
I just get duplicated mails since switching to KDE 4.

Confirm this bug with KMail 1.13.5 / KDE 4.4.5 on Debian testing amd64.
Comment 19 Roman Zimmermann 2011-06-25 22:58:16 UTC
I can confirm this bug with KMail 2.1.0 / KDE 4.6.3 on gentoo amd64.
Comment 20 Laurent Montel 2015-04-12 09:57:19 UTC
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
