What I was doing when the application crashed:
I have moved from KDE 4.1 to 4.3. Panels were established with 4.1. Konqueror and Kickoff can plant icons in a panel sometimes and sometimes not. A new panel was set up under 4.3. It was accepting icons. Then there was a plasma crash and automatic recovery. Then the same panel would not accept an icon from Kickoff. At the same time a previous panel that was not accepting icons, began to accept them. There seems to be a difference between the different panels. 

Current KDE4 lineup.
