Version: (using KDE 4.3.1) OS: Linux Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package KDE3's "Quick Browser" panel applet provided very useful functionality: a button on the panel pointing to a directory, which can be used to quickly launch the objects in that directory. To achieve the same functionality in KDE4, you can add a "Folder View" plasmoid to the plasma panel. However, the KDE4 folder view is missing one key piece of functionality that KDE3 had: if the folder contained a .desktop file, Quick Browser would read the desktop file and display the contents of the "Name=" entry in it, rather than displaying the name of the .desktop file. (See: http://www.darose.net/KDE3QuickBrowser.png vs. http://www.darose.net/KDE4FolderView.png pointing to the same folder.) It would be extremely nice to have the KDE3 functionality back - either automatically, or via an option.

An important piece of info from 249576:this only happens when FolderView is set to display a protocol other than the desktop:/ protocol.
This is in fact a bug in kdirmodel or deeper in kio, not in folderview, but I'll try to locate the origin of the issue anyway. Thank you for reporting.
Ignat: any news on this? The last version this was reported with according to the bug reports was 4.5 which is quite old.
Thank you for reminding me about this one. Yes, it's still true, we need to rewrite the desktop:/ kioslave to use / as the base directory to fix this. Currently, the file:/ protocol is used for any path other than ~/Desktop, and it does not parse desktop files by design.
Thank you for the feedback. JFYI: it would be nice if you could change the status and set the current version when you reply.

Hello! This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5. Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging Thanks for your understanding!
