Description Dotan Cohen 2009-08-27 21:55:39 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.0)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Please place the options in the Plasma panel's "Panel Options" to the top-level as opposed to being in a submenu. They only show when the widgets are unlocked, so they will not distract during normal usage. Additionally, having them in a submenu makes them slightly difficult to find and adds yet another layer of complexity to the panel configuration.

In a completely non-scientific test of six guinea pigs, I asked five non-KDE users and one KDE3 user to move the panel to a different screen edge and to make it wider. Every single one of them right-clicked on the panel at some point, but only two of them even looked in the "Panel Options" dialogue. Additionally, every single one of them responded that the procedure is too long when asked if it was very short, reasonable, or too long.

Thank you for considering this.

which is the default

the options only appear in a submenu when a widget is clicked on and it provides options itself. the panels options are put into a submenu at this point so that they are still available but do not detract from the main purpose of the menu (the widget) or make the menu unreasonably large (reducing its usability)

Very good, that makes my point.

The panels options will not detract from the main purpose of the menu nor make the menu unreasonably large precisely because they are only shown when the widgets are unlocked.

This bug is not asking to make the panel options show when the widgets are locked, it is asking to have them top-level (instead of in a submenu) when the widgets are unlocked. I apologize for not being clear about that.

Very simply, I think that this:

Should be changed to this:

Having "Panel Settings" under "Panel Options" is just too complex for users. Put it all under "Panel Options". Of course, the change would only be noticeable when the panel is unlocked: the locked panel would remain exactly as it is.

Ok, clarification from u7y ML -- it is not about panel control submenu, but panel menu submenu. From original post, I thought it was about control remote.

Please also note, that this wish goes with HIG -- here we have reverse case of poor submenu ratio. Few items in main menu, a lot in submenu. So it would be good to have it fixed also to conform to HIG.

For moving an applet/widget from one position to another in KDE4 panel you have to do the following:
1) unlock the panel (in case it's locked), 2) right click the panel, 3) move the mouse over "Panel options", then 4) move the mouse over and click "Panel settings", 5) move the mouse over and click the desired widget, 6) drag the widget to the new position, 7) release mouse button at the new position, and finally, 7) close panel settings.
In KDE3 to do the same you have:
1) right click on the desired applet, 2) select "move applet" 3) drag and release applet at the new position. That's it.
Can you explain why the former is better solution than the latter?
Or the devs just had to invent something, and as the wheel's been already invented they had to make it square?

Istvan, I believe your comment is completely unrelated with this issue. Placement of the "panel option" does not change number of operations you have to perform with current UI.

Please post new report for it (checking for duplicates, because I guess it is already there).
