Description Thomas Bächler 2009-08-11 22:19:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Unspecified Linux

I have a rather small panel on the bottom of my desktop. When I do any of the following operations, the panel height increases by a few pixels:

- Disable compositing with the keyboard shortcut
- Enable compositing with the keyboard shortcut
- Change the Plasma design
- Change the RANDR configuration (add a new screen, I only tested this one on 4.2, not yet on 4.3)
- Probably more

I would expect that the panel stays the same in size unless I reconfigure its height myself.

I am using Arch Linux binary packages for KDE 4.3 on x86_64.

This is probably fixed in trunk, i saw a commit in that direction. Do you have the possibility to install kde from trunk and check?
Comment 2 Thomas Bächler 2009-08-12 14:45:51 UTC
Not easily, as I would have to build KDE and all of the needed components from source. Our build scripts only cover the current 4.3 release, so this would be a few hours' work at least.

If you could point me to the specific commit which I could backport to 4.3, that would be much easier and only a few minutes work + compile time.

Indeed, this is mostly bug 184905 (now both fixed in trunk at 4.3.1code). It matches the disable/enable compositing situation. The other situations are related as well.
The patch against 4.3.x is at: http://websvn.kde.org/branches/KDE/4.3/kdebase/workspace/plasma/containments/panel/panel.cpp?r1=1007304&r2=1007303&pathrev=1007304&view=patch

Can this be marked as fixed with those patches?

I just installed 4.3.1 packages for kubuntu karmic and notice that this bug still exists. Panel still resizes for all those above actions. But it seems to happen only when compositing is enabled.

I have this problem since kde 4.2 on fedora. Now I have fedora kde 4.3.0 packages and the problem occurs like Thomas says on the first post.

Steps to reproduce:
- set the panel to a smaller height than the default size
- change screen resolution or kwin compositing etc like Thomas says

It would be nice if you reintroduce a setting like in kde 3.x with the panel height (smallest, small, medium, large etc etc).

As mentioned earlier, this is a dupe of bug 184905.
