Description Janet 2009-07-05 16:23:54 UTC
Version: KDE 4.3 RC (using KDE 4.2.90)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

With 4.3 RC I once again have the problem that my folder view activity shows a vertical scrollbar at the left side when the activities are bound to desktops, on first re-login after I activated that feature. At the same time the first icon on the folder view desktop is covered by my upper panel. Only when I drag this first icon to another place the scrollbar vanishes. But dragging the icon to just a lower position doesn't work, I have to drag it to a completely other position. After that I can drag it back to the same position and it is placed correctly below the panel. But its text now is covered by the second icon below it which isn't newly placed automatically. I have to deactivate the option to align the icons to grid, move the icons and the reactivate the grid option.

Everything looks fine now, so I log out and log in again. And voilà, scrollbar is there again, first icon again is covered by upper panel.

icon on desktop without scrollbar
Comment 6 Peter 2009-08-16 09:48:27 UTC
I use KDE 4.3.0 and also get a scrollbar on the desktop with "folder view". I see the scrollbar if there is an icon placed on the desktop too close to the bottom of the desktop. If I just slightly move it upwards the scrollbar will not appear. Additional: if I try to place an icon directly to the border of the desktop it will not be placed there but instead already moved a bit inward -> so there is a check how close icons are allowed to be placed, but obviously not correctly.

When I move the scrollbar ab bit upwards it disappears until I reboot or logout an in again, then it is there again.

Any news on this? It's quite annoying to replace the icons about every third or fourth login because they wander to the top of the screen. Also KDE doesn't seem to get the grid right, the rows seem to be displaced after I moved the icons down to get rid of the scrollbar: When I then drag an icon to the desktop it is placed half way between the other rows of icons. I then also have to deactivate the align to grid option and reenable it to get the new icon aligned. To me as user it looks like the size of the available space on the desktop isn't seen correctly and everytime I login it gets adjusted but adjusted wrong so that the icons wander.

Could someone please change the bug title? It also happens with the folder view desktop when the desktops are not coupled with activities.

Also connected with this problems seems to be the position of the icons and the grid:

My desktop looks like this: Huge panel with starters at the bottom and small panel with task manager at the top of the screen. The desktop icons are places in the four corners of the screen.

It looks like the calculated grid is wrong. The upper part of the screen seems to have another grid as the bottom part. When I save a file on the desktop it is correctly aligned at the top of the screen below the other icons. I don't want to have it there, all temporary stuff goes to the bottom on my desktop. So I drag it there. And it does *not* align correctly with the other icons but somehow sits between two rows. The icons only align correctly after I disable the grid and reenable it.

My icons wander towards the top of the screen after every login, so after every login I have that scrollbar and after every login I have to select all icons and drag the whole thing down a little. I can avoid that for about three logins when I reduce the space between the upper icons and the bottom icons. They wander up nonetheless but it takes two more logins before the scrollbar appears. But it doesn't look good to have the icons that way.

This is a very annoying problem and I hope it will be solved soon. Any more information I can provide?

BTW: Bug 201350 seems to be related.

There is a strange workaround: when I have the eventlist plasmoid (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=107779) on my desktop, the icons don't wander anymore and so no scrollbar is produced! Alas at the same time this plasmoid also causes Bug 206395 and Bug 206396. Maybe looking into the sourcecode of this plasmoid can help to solve this issue with the wandering icons and the scrollbar.

I have this exact same issue. I have folder view enabled on desktop and I had an icon which was slightly over the edge at the top. And I had this panel at the right side. The moment I moved that icon away from the edge it disappeared.

All the descriptions mostly ~matches~ bug 185179, do you all agree on merging this two bug reports? Thanks

I tried something tricky - Created new GADGET "Lock/Logout" (no matter what gadget you created). Now the desktop is normal with the gadget. I putted it to the right down side on my desktop and it doesn't prevent me.
