This reminds me bug 182511,
How were you adding the widget? Dragging from the "Add Widgets" dialog to the Plasma panel ?
Thanks
Comment 2 Christoph Thielecke 2009-05-09 09:33:57 UTC
Yes, dragging from dialog.
Comment 3 Dario Andres 2009-06-12 15:07:10 UTC
Can you still reproduce the crash with an updated version ? Thanks

Comment 36 Raffaele 2010-05-23 10:45:19 UTC
I use KDE since 4.0 and I really love it. It must be said, KDE is now the best DE around, but I still cannot understand why such a "natural" task like drag'n'drop is still so painful! I remember this issue lasts since the beginning.. Also, adding Plasmoid by dragging them should be more intuitive. Eg you should show a placeholder below the mouse and move the items on the panel accordingly. I know it can be difficult to technically accomplish it, but a good idea could be using the plasma API for defining form factor. At least when you are placing it on a panel... But also dragging on desktop should needs a kind of visual feedback
Comment 37 Beat Wolf 2010-05-23 10:59:31 UTC
draging on the panel is supposed to show a placeholder.
Comment 38 Beat Wolf 2010-05-23 11:00:33 UTC

Comment 39 Raffaele 2010-05-23 11:36:27 UTC
I don't know why it doesn't work.. Maybe it's only implemented for native (C++) applets and not for scripted ones?
Comment 40 Beat Wolf 2010-05-23 11:39:46 UTC
Works for scripted too here...
Comment 41 Raffaele 2010-05-23 16:33:59 UTC
Not here :/ I'm using 4.4.2 on Ubuntu, and this feature (the placeholder) is completely buggy: almost often the placeholder doesn't even appear. When it appears it stays in the panel even if I decide not to place the plasmoid in the panel anymore and redrag it in the "Add Widget" stuff. I don't think it's a packaging problem. Also, there is no visual feedback when you drag an applet on the desktop. Sometimes the operation seems to have no effect; sometimes it causes plasma to crash; sometimes nothing happens, but plasma get notified the plasmoid has been successfully added: if you can't see it you lost it forever (Actually this is quite annoying). Hoping this report is useful. I think that plasmoids are quite stable, but the whole "download and add" process would need to be redisenged. My2c
Comment 42 Toralf Förster 2010-05-29 17:43:57 UTC
4.4.3 suffers from this bug - I tried to add the digital clock to the panel
Comment 43 Nicolas L. 2010-06-04 14:02:31 UTC
can you provide the crash log from kde 4.4.3 please ?
Comment 44 zlobomir 2010-06-04 16:33:01 UTC
Hello,

In case this was addressed to me, no, I am sorry, I can't. I really like
KDE and will switch to it again, but for me stability is crucial and
until stable releases are really stable, I am forced to use Gnome,
although it is a bit uglier, sorry.

Regards,

Zlobi

With so many duplicates we should keep this open for now i think, at least until the release of 4.5

New crash information added by DrKonqi

plasma-desktop (0.3) on KDE Platform 4.5.00 (KDE 4.5.0) using Qt 4.6.3

I experienced this bug while trying to drag the Binary Clock widget back to its rightful place. It had seemed to freeze up earlier so I had thought to remove it then put it back, sort of a widget restart. Got a complete plasma crash instead. I've added the details here instead of creating a new report as the situation seems to be nearly the same.

[Comment from a bug report cleaner]
Note: bug 271844 has this backtrace (the situation also matches) when using KDE SC 4.6.2 and Qt 4.7.2; may be some of those reports should be reopened? (or use bug 271844 as a new case)
Regards
