This reminds me bug 182511, How were you adding the widget? Dragging from the "Add Widgets" dialog to the Plasma panel ? Thanks
Yes, dragging from dialog.
Can you still reproduce the crash with an updated version ? Thanks

I use KDE since 4.0 and I really love it. It must be said, KDE is now the best DE around, but I still cannot understand why such a "natural" task like drag'n'drop is still so painful! I remember this issue lasts since the beginning.. Also, adding Plasmoid by dragging them should be more intuitive. Eg you should show a placeholder below the mouse and move the items on the panel accordingly. I know it can be difficult to technically accomplish it, but a good idea could be using the plasma API for defining form factor. At least when you are placing it on a panel... But also dragging on desktop should needs a kind of visual feedback
draging on the panel is supposed to show a placeholder.
*** Bug 238537 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I don't know why it doesn't work.. Maybe it's only implemented for native (C++) applets and not for scripted ones?
Works for scripted too here...
Not here :/ I'm using 4.4.2 on Ubuntu, and this feature (the placeholder) is completely buggy: almost often the placeholder doesn't even appear. When it appears it stays in the panel even if I decide not to place the plasmoid in the panel anymore and redrag it in the "Add Widget" stuff. I don't think it's a packaging problem. Also, there is no visual feedback when you drag an applet on the desktop. Sometimes the operation seems to have no effect; sometimes it causes plasma to crash; sometimes nothing happens, but plasma get notified the plasmoid has been successfully added: if you can't see it you lost it forever (Actually this is quite annoying). Hoping this report is useful. I think that plasmoids are quite stable, but the whole "download and add" process would need to be redisenged. My2c
4.4.3 suffers from this bug - I tried to add the digital clock to the panel
can you provide the crash log from kde 4.4.3 please ?
Hello, In case this was addressed to me, no, I am sorry, I can't. I really like KDE and will switch to it again, but for me stability is crucial and until stable releases are really stable, I am forced to use Gnome, although it is a bit uglier, sorry. please reopen if after using kde again you still experience this issue
With so many duplicates we should keep this open for now i think, at least until the release of 4.5
i tested comment #42 and it crashes for me but seems an other crash, i will look if i can get infos
for #42 this should be fixed on 4.4 and trunk now
