Version: (using KDE 4.2.2) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Moving a desktop widget is very smooth and intuitive - just drag-n-drop to the exact target location, whether on desktop or panel. The converse operation, however, is very cumbersome: In order to move an icon around the panel, you must first enter the panel settings mode, either by clicking the panel's settings icon or right-clicking on the icon, then selecting Panel Options, and then selecting Panel Settings from the menu. Then you can drag-n-drop the icon, and finally you must close the panel settings mode by clicking the panel configuration window's little red X button, or, if you figured this out, by right-clicking anywhere, which has the side effect of opening a context menu of whatever u clicked on, and then dismissing this context menu (the escape key doesn't seem to close the settings mode, btw - a separate suggestion). Moving the panel icon off to the desktop is even worse - all the above is still necessary, but in addition, once the icon is dragged off the panel to the desktop, it reappears at at a fixed position at the top of the screen regardless of where it was dropped, and when the whole operation is over, u need to drag it again from the top of the screen to its final position on the desktop. This is way too cumbersome and unintuitive... The expected behavior should be just as smooth and intuitive as when dragging a desktop widget: just click on a panel icon, drag it to its target position (whether on the panel or the desktop), and release. drag-n-drop.

Thanks for the link - I agree with that one too. I agree with anything that makes the user think less and work less and ask for other people's help less - that's what usability is all about. But I'm looking in this particular case for something much simpler. Drag a widget from desktop to panel - nice and smooth. Drag it back - not even close. The behavior is not even consistent with itself, not to mention common usability guidelines and existing user intuition.
I sorely miss this feature from 3.x
Hello! This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable. Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging Thanks for your understanding!
