Description spamfang1199 2009-04-24 16:01:09 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package

1. Kde uses too much ram. I am not able to let 3 different users at once be logged in and switch between them. I have 756mb ram. That was always more than sufficient for kde 3.5. But now it is barely enough to let 1 user work normally (a second one can (though KDE 4.2.2 crashes sometimes then). It seems not to give back all of the memory it used, when a user logged out.

2. I have a XP 1800+ with a Nvidia TI4200. But KDE feels sluggish sometimes (browsing with dolphin etc.). If more than only a few programs are running (web-browser, downloads, amarok) the gui becomes slow. In kde 3.5 it was very hard (next to impossible) to slow the UI down. I think it is related to the low memory problem somehow.

Bottom line:

Please be more resources friendly. Don't forget that KDE4 has someday to become the standard Desktop for NETBOOKS!

Thanks for all of your great work. I just love KDE (using it since kde 1) - and especially KDE 4 .

I'm sure they're working on this, but it also greatly depends on other factors, including your distro: for example, my Arch install with KDE is a well under 300MB (not bad for these days), while Ubuntu would be considerably more resource-hungry. Netbooks are a valid concern, but keep in mind, you're not likely to have three users logged into a netbook at once, either. It would be more helpful if you had some concrete suggestions.

Sorry! I don't have much concrete. Xorg uses much too much CPU. Memory consumption is too high. And that, even when only a single user is logged in. I'm sorry to say that: But if you open a few programs (like OO-writer, Iceweasel and a terminal) things get sluggish. It is comparable to windows vista then :-(. This is not a good thing. Keep in mind that windows 7 is designed to run on netbooks. The felt speed will be much better than. So don't let KDE 4 get unusuable for netbooks and older PC's like mine.

And please keep up the good work :-)!

I am running now the 4.3.4 release from Debian-Sid. The composite effects make the scrolling in apps, like firefox or OpenOffice slow. If I turn them off, scrolling is fast again. Please fix that, and keep up your outstanding work.

I believe that memory consumption is always a concern in developing software.
