Version: unknown (using 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0) "release 93", KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop / openSUSE_11.1) Compiler: gcc OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.27.7-9-pae After a problem with ripping a DVD with K9copy, which did not recognize that the home disk had only 3 gib left and did not warn or give me an error message (separate bug report filed), I restarted the system with a completely full home partition. KDE, upon boot, gave a "home partition full" error, and refused to boot further. Using Opensuses rescue system, I deleted the offending iso file created by K9copy to make some space. Upon reboot, KDE booted well, but now I have got the default installation desktop once again, all my preferences are seemingly not used or found. Kopete does not find his contact file anymore, and thinks that neither contacts, nor accounts are installed. I have not yet searched for other problems, but there might well be. Note that a problem I had with double and triple panel entries has disappeared now.

either a file system problem that led to data loss in this situation or perhaps kconfig ran into problems when trying to save configuration data out (write, replace). since it affected kopete as well, this obviously isn't limited to plasma. are there any contents in your ~/.kde/share/config at all?
Yes. I have never looked into that directory, but it seems okay (aka it contains lots of files) Additionally, I had to reenter all data into Kopete manually, despite all the files being in the ~/.kde4/share/apps/kopete directory. I had a copy of those files elsewhere, they are the same files, but Kopete doesn't seem to see this directory. I have not so much knowledge of Linux and KDE "internals", but obviously the kde preferences default to something else then my ~/.kde4/share/apps folder (it seems) so the existing preferences are not read. Can I somehow figure out where configuration files are saved at the moment, I could try this with kopete and look there for other things? At least those for kopete still exist (before-bug version), so I "just" have to get KDE to read those files? I understand that me filing this under plasma was not the wisest of choices, but it was the first stop for me since I first found out about the general look of KDE being changed.
I have tried to de- and reinstall kopete to get it to read the existing configuration files as mentioned above, it does not read these files after a desinstallation. It has to read something else elsewhere.
hm... when logged into a kde session, what does this command return when run from a konsole window: kde4-config --localprefix
/home/Goettschwan/.kde4/ which seems correct. Where would the desktop preferences normally be saved? I have looked in .kde4/share/apps/plasma and in share/apps/desktoptheme, the first contains info for a comic widget not currently used and nothing else, the second contains two empty folders "aya" and "default", which both contain an empty folder "wallpapers".
with that prefix, the preferences should be in: ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc and ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
with that prefix, the preferences should be in: ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc and ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
I have two plamarc files on my system, one is in etc/kde4/share/config and the one in home. They differ quite largely in size and date. This is normal I suppose? I looked into the files I have in home. I supposed that any changes I make to the desktop (e.g. selecting another default wallpaper from the shipped ones) should be reflected in those files. I now changed my wallpaper and even rebooted. I now get this in plasma-appletsrc (the two paragraphs follow one another after changing): [Containments][12][Configuration][Wallpaper][image] slideTimer=600 slidepaths=/usr/share/wallpapers/ userswallpapers= wallpaper=/usr/share/wallpapers/Air wallpapercolor=56,111,150 wallpaperposition=0 [Containments][12][Wallpaper][image] slideTimer=600 slidepaths=/usr/share/wallpapers/ userswallpapers= wallpaper=/usr/share/wallpapers/Blue_Curl wallpapercolor=56,111,150 wallpaperposition=0 So it seems to me as if the files are reverted, because I do not find my original settings in those files. Have to do it again I suppose.
I confirm that I have this bug and I had it with all my 4.* versions. I think it's quite a critical bug (make me fear I could loose more than just the settings, although it never was the case). Plasma lost its settings, Kopete lost its settings, KMail kept its settings (for instance) but wasn't running when disk was full.
I can also confirm that I have this bug with version 4.2.3. Unfortunately my hard disk became full and I lost everything that was open when the hard disk was full (email data, email settings, plasma applets, plasma settings, etc.). Does anyone have an idea how it is possible that the email data is being removed when the hard disk is full?
Same here in Version 4.2.4: My Kopete, KMail and Plasma settings got lost when my home was at 100%. Wasn't able to revert the settings without a backup.
