Description Dotan Cohen 2008-12-05 01:10:20 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.3)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Please return the option of not aligning Icons to a grid. When sorting files (to move them, delete them, etc) I like to move them within the window for my own temporary organization. Thanks.

I can confirm that in KDE 4.2 in Dolphin there is no way to disable the grid. This is important as spatial organization is actually a key human habit. Note that the desktop Folder View allows one to disable the grid, but Dolphin does not.

Preferably the temporary organization one makes by moving the icons, shouldn't be reset when you minimize the window, refresh it or change its size either - or even better; not even when you close it. The organization should only be reset when one chooses to have the icons sorted automatically.

The possibility to keep files graphically organized in folders until deliberately changed was the other of the only two features I've considered better in Windows and implementing it would really be appreciated. Previous versions of KDE did reset the organization too easily but now it could be made really good. A hidden file in each directory with pixel offsets from the upper left corner to all icons would be a simple solution and probably without much of a performance hit.

Thanks for the suggestion, but based on the number of votes and the age of the bug this wish won't be implemented.

40 votes and a dupe is insignificant? That is your choice to make, Peter, but this is a very useful feature that takes into account natural human tendencies for spacial organization.

Only 2 persons voted in 3 years for this request (each of them spending 20 points) - this is really very less. The problem is that this is no feature that can be solved with a small patch, it means a lot of efforts. I can understand that you'd like this feature and don't object that it might be useful, but I simply need to find a balance between features that are really requested by a lot of people vs. features that are useful but only requested by a rather small group :-( (e.g. compare this bug with bug 179302...)

Sorry, I thought that was 40 votes! It has been a while since I've used the BKO voting system.

Thank you for at least having considered the feature, Peter. I understand that not every deserving RFE can be allocated the time, and that you must prioritize. Have a great week!
