Version: (using KDE 4.1.0) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Many KDE applications go against the HIG doctrine of forbidding MDI interfaces (tabs). Examples of such include Konqueror, Dolphin, Kopete, and Konsole. Some other applications "bend the rules", such as Kate. These applications should be restricted to one document/tab open at a time until the HIG is amended to allow for MDI. The relevant bug requesting that the HIG be amended is here: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127298
I think it is wrong move -- Dotan, think "cost". You want developers should stop fixing real bugs, go remove MDI mode (quite a work), then after HIG update, they should do the same work but in reverse? Please, respect developers time. The HIG is outdated and _it_ should be fixed (and you know it), not the applications like Kate or Konqueror. There is no need to be more papal than Pope himself. WONTFIX/INVALID if you ask me. PS. Another story that HIG updating is dead for a long time and till now I didn't figure out where to write to make some changes.
I also do not want the tabs removed from Konqueror and Dolphin. But it is in direct violation of the KDE HIG. There is a conflict here, and one side has to budge. Either the applications must be brought in line with the HIG, or the HIG has to change to accommodate the features that users demand.
MP is right, WONTFIX. The HIG needs to be updated to talk more explicity about SDI/MDIs (Bug 127298)
As per Celeste's and Maciej's comments, I am changing the subject to better reflect the nature of the problem, and I am marking as depends on Bug 127298. This bug can be closed when the conflict no longer exists, that is when either the applications are brought in line with the HIG, or when the HIG is brought in line with the features that users want.
This will be resolved in the writing of the MDI/SDI guidelines. See bug 127298 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 127298 ***
This bug is not a dupe of bug 127298. Bug 127298 requests a specific change, and this bug identifies a conflict. While solving bug 127298 will also solve this bug, there are other solutions (mentioned earlier) that will solve this bug. Therefore this bug is marked as depending upon bug 127298. When the conflict no longer exists, either by solving bug 127298 or by other means, then this bug will be resolved.
