Several minutes before I had clicked on a mailto link which brought up kmail. However, I closed that window. So maybe due to that kmail was still running in the background somehow. It just happened again and I indeed still have a running kmail process. So I guess this kmail process is regularly looking for new mail in the background. A further remark: kmail just crashes, I don't get asked for a password to actually access the mail server... [if the regular mail checking theory is correct this might be helpful]

Can not reproduce following steps mentioned by Oliver or Finex. No crashes on 1.11.2.
Bug 190920 seems to be related to this on KDE4.2.2. It has some information about the possible cause.
